Description: Friars' Bakehouse is a small bakery smack in the downtown of Bangor, Maine. It is operated by the Franciscan Brothers of St. Elizabeth of Hungary. The baking brother is a master at his craft. Due to the fact that the establishment has only one baker and all of the baked goods are artisan, you will not find the variety that is available at larger thaw and bake bakeries. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Friday from 8:30 a. m. until 2:00 p. m. When the shop is closed, Friars' breads are available at the Fairmount Market on Hammond St.Friars' Brewhouse is a adjunct to but, separate from the bakery. The baker has branched out and is now creating artisan beers in the same manner that he creates breads and pastries. The actual Brewhouse is located on the 34 acre grounds of St. Elizabeth Monastery perched on the side of Orcutt Mountain in lovely Bucksport, Maine. NO BEER IS SOLD OUT OF THE FRIARS' BAKEHOUSE! We have teamed up with Bangor Wine and Cheese Co. on Hammond Street. All of our fine brews are available there on a regular basis. Stop in at the Bangor Wine and Cheese an say, "Hello!" to Eric and Christine.

Love going to the Friars Bakehouse whenever I am in Bangor Maine. The food and coffee is excellent and the brothers are wonderful! I love the coconut macaroons!

“Lovely little spot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2013

A lovely quiet little cafe and bakery. The place smelt delicious. The baked goods are huge and prices very reasonable. We purchased two whoopie pies which were a nice treat. Will definately visit again when in the area.

“The monks deserve your business!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 28, 2013

I visited the Bakehouse on Thurs 3/21/13 and enjoyed everything about the monks' cozy restaurant. The hours were odd indeed: I think it opened at 8:22a and closed at 1:07p or something like that. But we made time to visit - got a 6-pk of hot cross buns (like a raisin bread that was puffy like a cinnamon roll w/yummy frosting on top) and an order of split pea soup to go. My travel partner loved the soup - said it was some of the best she's ever tasted! Great value ($6 for buns and about $4-5 for soup) for the quality and quantity of food too. We gave an extra generous donation/tip just to support the monks - and I would've tried other food but we were in a bit of a rush. Overall, though, it's definitely worth a stop for a late breakfast or early lunch. Just check the hours!! They're very friendly - what a nice slow easy change of pace from large chain restaurants.
