“Very disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2011

My husband and I traveled around New England for 11 days. We were in Bangor for the Tommyknockers tour, and decided to stay for a night. We had read the TripAdvisor reviews for the Charles Inn and were not expecting to be blown away, but were hoping that the hotel would be "aged" in a good way. We had very low expectations, and the lobby seemed nice enough. I did not find the woman who checked us in overly friendly, or even helpful. When we got to our room, disappointment set in. The TV was very old, and only got 5 channels. The bathroom was dingy and the fan (connected to the light) was incredibly loud. The room was in dire need of a new paint job, and just felt dingy & dirty. The bed was horrible. We kept rolling to the middle of the bed, and we were only given one threadbare cased thin pillow each. I had to sleep with a blanket under the pillow to ensure I wouldn't wake up a with a sore neck. It is apparent that even though the owners display expensive art in their lobby, guest comfort is not a concern. Then again, if a painting for $3500 was sold, I guess they could paint a room and get some new pillows. I felt gross, stiff and groggy the next morning. the continental breakfast wasn't great either. The bagels were dry and they didn't have any water (sounds like a strange complaint- but it's a challenge to stay hydrated when you're on the road for an extended period of time). The Irish pub across the street was fun. We had a good time talking to the bartender and some of the regulars, but all in all, we should have done the tour and headed to our next destination skipping a night in Bangor all together.

Room Tip: pick a different hotel.

“Wonderful People”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2011

We had a wonderful time at this hotel- it's old, clean and in the center of town! The owner was wonderful! We usually stay in a chain hotel when we're in the area, but this was fantastic! We loved the resident Pug!

Room Tip: Tell them if you have dogs- they have special rooms and they're nice and clean!

“Dim but adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2011

It's poorly lit and poorly furnished, but clean and functional enough. Everything about the place is slightly odd, but not terrible. Friendly enough staff. At one point my bed broke, but they came and fixed it within an hour. Breakfast was pathetic. So, mediocre but fine.

“Funky Town”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 8, 2011

Not as it appears online. This is not a quaint, boutique hotel. This is an old, tired inn. The management are genuine but the town seems to be in a funk (depressed). This inn is in desperate need of a remodel, so goes downtown. Dining & pub options in the area are surprisingly good. I'd like to visit Bangor again in better economic times but I'd seek out better lodging options even though this one has the best location.

“Not really what we expected... A little too "run down" :(”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2011

Thought we were staying at a boutique style hotel - a little charm, a comfortable room, and a unique experience. This was not the case. The hotel felt old and run down. The bed was very uncomfortable and the tv was from the early 90's. The building seemed secure and staff were friendly, but be warned, this is in NO way an upscale hotel. Not even on par with a typical econo style hotel. Just too old and tired to be comfortable to MOST guests.
