“A touch of class.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2014

If you are looking for a touch of class and some real ambience then Dakota is the place. The Friday offer is excellent value value for money but on the down side I had to request our cocktails and was overcharged for our food bill. In fairness these issues were quickly resolved when raised. There is a real sense of luxury in Dakota and everything about it screams comfort and quality. The staff working in the bar and grill were very attentive andTammy in particular was a star and did all she could to make our stay enjoyable. We will definitely be back.

Our stay was fine, good food great service and very well decorated its the small touches that make the difference and free Wi-Fi went down well as well as the continental cooked breakfast in the morning.. No complaints for a cheap way to stay near Edinburgh this is the way to do it a fast train into the city is quick and efficient and means its never a chore to get to the capital.

Room Tip: No Gym or spa here but for a comfortable reasonably priced stay look no further!

Were it not for the staff, this rating would be 2 star- without exception they are cheerful, friendly, professional and helpful.

While our room was pleasant enough, you need a degree in science to set the air con / heating. The shower temperature and flow was a nightmare to adjust and the shower doors didn't seal, resulting in a flooded bathroom floor.

The evening meal in the Grill was a complete disappointment- cold soup followed by poorly cooked steak and a truffle the size of a 50p for dessert (wouldn't have felt so cheated if it was priced at 50p!)

My wife and I stayed at the Dakota in Edinburgh the night before flying out to Barbados on honeymoon. The staff were very friendly and helpful. As their restaurant was closed for refurbishments, they organised us a complimentary shuttle to a local restaurant and they picked us up afterwards. Kenny (the concierge) even looked after some of our bags while we were away on honeymoon. We also left our car in their car park (at our own risk). When we returned, we were pleased to find the car untouched and all our left luggage well looked after.

The rooms are comfortable and cosy.

Taxis to Edinburgh airport from the hotel are approximately £20 each way at the time of writing.

Thanks to the Dakota team for a wonderful stay. We would highly recommend them!

We stayed for two nights at the end of December as we wanted a base for visiting Edinburgh before visiting relatives for New Year’s Eve, and paid around half price with a deal through Late Rooms.

The room was okay but we would have been very disappointed if we had paid £199 a night, which was the full price listed. The room size was just on the small size, with only one armchair and some of the little details were lacking, for example, my coffee-loving wife was very unimpressed with the poor quality coffee in the room. Although the bed was a reasonable size the pillows were rather ‘thin’ and uncomfortable. We assume that we were given one of the lesser quality rooms as we had booked on a deal.

The ground floor area, however, was very pleasant, with several attractive seating areas around the reception and bar areas. We ate in the bar area on our first night and the food (Omelette Arnold Bennett and Eggs Smoked Haddock) were excellent. Both meals were cooked to perfection and tasted wonderful.

If you’re visiting Edinburgh for the day, would recommend getting a taxi to the nearby Dalmeny train station (order from reception) and it’s about 15 minutes to Edinburgh Station, exiting near Princes Street.

Decided to stop off for an overnight stay at the Dakota on our way home to the borders after a day visit to friends in Fife. The Hotel itself is excellent and in a great location to explore Edinburgh from the outskirts whilst being close to the Airport so would appeal to business people and weekend visitors alike. Its contemporary and modern & rooms are very well equipped which include ironing facilities, tea/coffee making facilities, free Wi-Fi and a large desk area which again, suggests target visitors are mainly business people. My partner & I Pre booked the Grill restaurant for dinner. The Restaurant itself is well laid out & big enough to accommodate larger parties but, still gives an intimate feel for couples and smaller groups of friends. Cannot fault the staff at this hotel, from the reception area to the restaurant, they are both friendly and attentive. At the restaurant, my partner and I were handed the menu which, basically consists of steak and fish dishes so, if you are not keen on either you may struggle to find something you enjoy! We were also given a set menu to look at. This showed a bottle of sauvignon blanc priced per glass or bottle or so we assumed (bottle price being £14.95). We decided to order this wine and 2 rump steaks which are priced at £25.00 each plus extra for the sauce. The waiter asked if we would like to opt for another wine which, at only a few pounds more, was far superior in taste. I agreed to this on the basis that it was a few pounds more. After receiving the wine, it was shortly followed by our steaks. The steak itself was very average and at £25 each, overpriced for what you get. The peppercorn sauce was also rather watery. Considering 'The Grill' is branded as not 'just' a hotel restaurant, we were both left feeling quite disappointed. Frankly, I've had equal food for half the price (and possibly even better). As for the wine, well this turned out to be more than a 'few' pounds more....double the £14.95 bottle to be exact! When I queried the £30 price with our waiter, he went and checked his wine list and said no, that is the correct price sir. When I explained I was going to buy a bottle at £14.95 which I had seen on the set menu he gave us, he then explained that was the half bottle price. I wasn't convinced at the truth of this, if that was the case a full bottle would be nearly £30 (bearing in mind I was meant to be getting a superior wine for a few pounds more but that would only make it the same price!). Having already politely queried the price, and due to the fact there were people at the table next to us, I reluctantly accepted this, paid the bill and returned to my room. To this day, i'm honestly not sure if the waiter conned us or whether the restaurant do indeed price wine by half bottles. If so, its the first place I've been where wine is priced by glass and half bottle only! To sum up, I would possibly stay here again but only on a Bed and Breakfast basis. I would take the 10 minute walk into the small town of South Queensferry where I could've had a better meal, overlooking the water and Forth Bridges and probably saved a third off my food bill!

From a very welcoming check-in to check-out, the whole process was seamless. The hotel and rooms are beautiful and the service was second to none. The staff were extremely friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. We had an evening meal and breakfast and the food was delicious. The staff were happy to recommend drinks and very knowledgeable.
We had a wonderful short break and look forward to visiting again.
