On a short break to Edinburgh with 12 and 14 year olds, this was a really good day out. My kids didn't really enjoy Edinburgh castle but loved this trip. We took the train from Waverly to South Queensferry (as described on the Maid of the Forth website), and the boat trip that left us on the island for an hour and a half. The boat was fun (bit cold up top but didn't stop the kids) with great views of the bridges and seals on a small island. Inchcolm Island was beautiful and peaceful, with plenty to explore during the time there, including the partly ruined abbey - I do like historic attractions you can climb on - which has a scary spiral staircase up the tower. There are also military remains from both world wars, including a tunnel, railway, what's left of some gun emplacements and pill boxes. Great views too, and lots of potential for photography. There is a visitor centre selling the same Historic Scotland stuff as elsewhere, and toilets, but you need to take a picnic if you want to eat more than shortbread and sweets. Can't imagine it would be so much fun in the rain, and the birds are really quite scary if you go high up. It felt like an adventure!
