“Beautiful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2012

We enjoyed walking the gardens, would like to come back and stay in one of the cottages for rent. And a added plus was seeing the bird rookery just before you enter. We took many photos of Spoonbills & Egrets nesting.

“Peaceful and relaxing”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2012

I've never done the tour of the main house, but I go there often for lunch and they have a great menu and a fantasic little resturant overlooking the lake and part of the garden. They have a seafood bisque that is AMAZING! comes with a delicious ceasar salad! Also make a great bloody mary. Try to get a table near the windows taht overlook the lake. you can watch the peacocks while you dine. Take a leisurely stroll through the gardens after lunch...so peaceful

“Stunning home and gardens in Southern Louisiana”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2012

I spent a couple of quality hours with my friends and camera at this beautiful site. The gardens are impeccably maintained, as are the buildings. Cajun hospitality abounds. I look forward to coming back with my husband and staying in one of the cottages.

Be sure to watch the video about the salt dome collapse.

“Pure Delight!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2012

I just visited Rip Van Winkle Gardens and once again, it was a pure delight! The staff is helpful and friendly yet laid back in the true Southern and Cajun style. With a peaceful atmosphere, seasonal colorful blooms, gentle sounds of nature and fascinating history, it is a joy to visit. The Joseph Jefferson Mansion (named for the actor, Joseph Jefferson who portrayed Rip Van Winkle) is a beautiful home. My favorite features are the master bedroom (in which is displayed some dresses made by J.J.'s wife), a picture of Joseph Jefferson with Helen Keller, the dining room in which the architecture is Steamboat Gothic style and the kitchen that is attached; which is highly unusual for a house this age. Also, Joseph Jefferson was an impressive artist and several of his pieces can be seen there. Peacocks can be seen roaming the grounds and they love to rest in the moss draped oaks. See my other review for more information.

“Beauty, History & Peacocks”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 11, 2012

A dear friend introduced me to this lovely spot on Jefferson Island not far from Lafayette & New Iberia, LA. The garden is named for the character that Mr. Jefferson was famous for portraying. It is also the site of a salt dome collapse and there is a video detailing the disaster. But what we love MOST is spending the night. There are three "cottages", two of which are the same building, the old servants' quarters behind the Jefferson Mansion and tucked in with the herb garden. The bottlebrush trees and shrubs were in full bloom there, and the bamboo garden is quite extensive. Once the gardens are closed to the public, it's only you and possibly two more couples on the grounds. One is able to stroll around this hidden gem of Louisiana like the Lord and Lady of the Manor in privacy. Have your complimentary wine and cheese on the porch of the Jefferson Mansion, which is a good idea for coffee in the morning after the peacocks wake you up early. The beds are heavenly, and the mini-fridges are stocked nicely with sweet and savory snacks for both evening and morning, a coffeepot and microwave. The restaurant is only open at lunch, so eat a late lunch and/or bring a picnic for lunch. You can leave the grounds after five to eat in nearby New Iberia (the staff will leave the code for the gate), but we prefer to picnic admist the gorgeous flowers overlooking the lake. Wonderful place for special occasions, large and small (ie WEDDINGS). It's one of our favorite weekend getaways from Houston and we are happy to bypass Lake Charles and the casinos for this little piece of heaven. There is a small fee for a guided tour of the mansion (the only way to see it).
