“Character, Charm, Cane River and Charles!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 28, 2013

Violet Hill Inn has it all. My husband and I hesitated to book a bed and breakfast because not all of our B&B experiences have been that great. But in Natchitoches, it seemed that B&B was the way to go. The town has so many choices. After quite a bit of online research, we settled on Violet Hill Inn after reading all of the reviews. We booked on Friday morning for a Friday afternoon arrival. We lucked out that there was availability. The home is beautiful and exquisitely appointed, the setting and view overlooking the Cane River Lake is stunning, especially from the back veranda, the rooms are lovely, spotless and comfortable (my husband, who has some back issues, is trying to find the exact mattress that we slept on, as he fell in love with the mattress in the Arthur Coble Room). The way the house is arranged and with the two large outdoor areas overlooking Cane River, we always felt that we had our privacy (which is a "biggie" for us). There is a reason that most every review mentions the innkeeper, Charles. He is some kind of wonderful!!! I could go on and on about Charles, but you just really must experience his charm and wit, his singing, his incredible breakfasts, his complete dedication to the comfort and care of his guests. He was never intrusive, but always appeared when needed, seemingly out of nowhere. Don't even bother to look any further........Violet Hill will not disappoint !! Just book it!!!

Excellent experience. Privacy! Comfortable, clean and beautiful. Gorgeous view of Cane River Lake from large back porch. Can walk down to dock for an even better view, while enjoying a drink. Very close walk to downtown pubs , shops and restaurants. Innskeeper was a pure joy. Pleasant and gracious; awesome cook! Breakfast was delish; bread pudding with yogurt and pecans, then Eggs Benedict with Dijon hollandaise sauce & southwestern grits. Generous portion and yummy! Would highly recommend and would return.

This B&B definitely lives up to the previous wonderful reviews--it is one of the best B&Bs in which we've ever stayed. The breakfasts were incredible; the service was impeccable; the location was perfect (in the historic district and on the lake); and Charles is charming, hospitable, and extremely helpful.

Room Tip: We had the room at the back--French doors to the patio and overlooking the lake.

This was our first time staying at a B&B. The Violett Hill house was very charming, like satying at your grandma's house! Furninshings inside were beautiful and everything was clean. Check in is a breeze even though the Inn Keeper doesnt stay there. You just go in and make yourself right at home. Other guests were pleasant to be around :) We satyed in the Prince Haithcoat room. The room was very clean and private for my hubby and I. It consisted of a half library/living room then a bedroom and bathroom. The only thing I would say about the sleeping in this room is, bring your own pillow and I wish they had some sort of blind that came down so the orange street lights weren't shining in the window. In the morning we met the Inn Keeper, Charles. He made the best breakfast and made our dining enjoyable and kept us laughing! I highly recommend this B&B.

Room Tip: If you are no use to the sound of the cars on hwy or like your room to be pitch black to sleep at ni...

My husband and I briefly stopped in Natchitoches on our way to Natchez, MS years ago and vowed we would return some day. It has now been placed on our vacation rotation list; and as long as Charles in in charge (ha!), Violet Hill will be our #1 place to stay! There are a lot of good options in town, but do yourself a favor and pick a b & b. You will NOT get the full Natchitoches experience in a hotel, trust me.

We chose the Prince Haitchcoat Suite, and absolutely loved it! We could've holed up in the cozy livingroom had it not been for all the sights and sounds which were beckoning from blocks away. The bed was so comfortable and had a delightful fresh smell. I want that Jacuzzi! Spotless and rejuvenating! There are also two lovely porches (front and back) depending upon your mood. Next time we will spend more time on the back veranda overlooking the Cane River...so inviting, so Southern, so picturesque.

While host Charles excels at whipping up filling, quality breakfasts (he will accommodate dietary needs...just ask!), his best gift is a natural charm and thoughtfulness. Rather than whistling while he works, he is often caught singing! He goes above and beyond to accommodate your every whim; and as a native, he knows the area inside and out. This is a gentleman with whom I could sit on the back porch for hours just chatting. He is a treasure!

We loved everything about Violet Hill...it should be featured in magazines, truly...lovely, well-maintained decor and exterior with many appreciated amenities. The owner is not complacent by any means; a new couch had just been installed in the Puckett Suite shortly before our arrival, and it, like all the furnishings, are top of the line.

Your visit may not be during a festival, but we lucked out being in town for Mardi Gras weekend. We actually were able to watch the parade from the front porch! What a great bonding experience with the other guests as well as those at neighboring b & b's! This is one friendly town, and it is contagious. So many smiling faces and greetings as I shopped my way along Front Street.

Room Tip: For less road noise, pick a room rather than a suite.

Such a beautiful home! Porches, front and back with plenty of chairs and even porch swings. The back porch looks out over the peaceful Cane River Lake, the front porch was the best place in town to watch the Mardi Gras Parade. We hadn't even planed on this so it was a wonderful treat. Charles is the Innkeeper and Chef. He is awesome and takes care of your every need. The 2 course breakfast was "OUT OF THIS WORLD!" We are already planning to return to Natchitoches, just to stay again at the VIOLET HILL!

Room Tip: I didn't stay there but the downstairs room just off the parlor, that was a library looked to be...

Wow! What can I say? First of all Violet Hill is in a wonderful location just steps from all the restaurants and shops in Natchitoches. Secondly, the house is beautiful. And the cliche--best for last. Charles and his breakfast--amazing! Blueberry bread pudding, mini-omelets, and cheesy grist with homemade biscuits, a neverending cup of delicious coffee and personal service. Charles is charming and funny and a wonderful cook. What a wonderful experience!

Room Tip: Call early!
