“Historic elegance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

We stayed here for one night while out touring some plantations. Angie was so friendly and her cooking was outstanding. We loved both the dinner experience and the breakfast. The dining room is beautiful and it feels like you are transported back in time. My only complaint would be wishing that the temperature in the house was quite chilly - but that can easily be forgiven since it is undoubtedly difficult to heat a house of that age and size.

This past February 28th, I celebrated my birthday one evening early as we sat at the 15+ foot long mahogany dining table and dined on four lovely courses while chatting with Mr. Marshall, the owner. It was definitely a special birthday! Everything about Madewood is special and, most important, authentic. You don't just stay, you get to live a peek into history. From the grand, stunning house itself (the unusual combination of being still a real home with decades of fascinating history), to the spacious rooms full of lovely antiques, to the friendliness and efficiency of the owner and the staff, the stay at Madewood was the highlight of our week long pilgrimage through Louisiana's plantations. The bedroom was large, the bed very comfortable, the bathroom was huge, too....and coffee came to my door the next morning on a silver tray! It was a memorable stay and one I hope to repeat.

Room Tip: The entire area around Madewood is quiet; you cannot make a wrong choice.

We stayed here for one night on the way to New Orleans with another couple. The house is beautiful, huge rooms, sweeping staircase and filled with original furniture and antiques. We were the only guests so it felt very luxurious having the house to ourselves. We had Mrs Marshall's bedroom which had the highest bed I have ever seen, felt like the princess and the pea. It also had a large en suite bathroom and dressing room so it was very spacious. We had picked this plantation house because they included a wine and cheese reception and dinner which would be traditional southern food. We were a little disappointed as we expected a big foodie experience but the food was just nice and the portions a little small. It was a great experience and would recommend it to anyone to try for one night.

We stayed for one night in between celebrating Mardi Gras in Lafayette and New Orleans. It was an extremely peaceful and relaxing time, in a beautiful house that has been carefully furnished and decorated to create an opportunity for a step back in time, but with today's modern comforts (great shower!)

No wifi, no tv, but music and conversation - lovely!

The evening was set up well to make the most of the different rooms in the house, Pre dinner drinks in the Library, dinner in the dining room, and then coffee and brandy in the drawing room. The dinner was nice, serving traditional food - not all to my taste, but it was good to try it.

We stayed in the Master Bedroom, which is a really good size, and has access to sit on the front balcony. The bed was very comfortable, and the bathroom, whilst very small, was modern and nicely decorated.

Room Tip: Each room is different, but I don't think you could make a bad choice!

In December 2012 we travelled to New Orleans for a one-week stay, during which we also drove out of town to visit some plantation houses (Laura's plantation) and stayed the night in Madewood.

The room we stayed in (Mrs. Marshall's Room) was a stately place in the house, with a very comfortable bed and a very elegant bathroom.

The complementary dinner was somewhat of a disappointment, although no one is to blame really. Because you will dine with all the other guests attending, it all depends a bit on whom you end up with at table. The couple we had diner with was a very nice American family. But the dining was a bit too much for the kids :-) But the food was great.

Also I felt a bit uncomfortable with the formal treatment given by the staff. Somehow it was perhaps all part of the experience of staying in such a house, but then again... I like it a bit more un-official.

Nevertheless, we had a great time, and would certainly advise the trip to others.

We are delighted that these guests enjoyed their stay at Madewood and that they found the bedroom and bath exceptional. We thank them for their appraisal of Madewood.

Regarding dinner, we had another couple with two small children that night, so we offered the writer a private dinner in the Music Room at no additional charge because there would be children at the table in the dining room. (This is a policy that we always follow.)

They declined the offer and seemed to enjoy themselves throughout the evening.

Madewood's atmosphere is one of casual elegance, and guests are invited to relax and enjoy themselves. However, we use antique silver trays and other formal items to serve guests, which we feel makes Madewood special. Some guests might prefer more casual service, but most guests enjoy being served in an elegant manner.

Respectfully submitted,
Keith Marshall

If you are looking to stay on an authentic plantation, rather than someplace commercial, this is it! Everything is taken care of here; once you arrive, you just relax and enjoy. Angie greeted us at the back door, and let us select our room from a few that were ready. Everything that evening was perfect: the home was cozy and decorated for Christmas, the wine hour was just lovely, and dinner was delicious. You are basically able to roam and explore all the common areas; there are a host of antiques and art. A really neat place to spend time. Do be aware that it is an old house and still has the historic feel, so some of the floor boards are uneven, there are a few stains, and some of the bathroom are very small. But overall it is worth the experience!

We arrived early after a long trying drive in the rain and Angie graciously allowed us to check in early so we could rest up and change before the wine tasting in the library. Every bit as enjoyable as before. Then the elegant and wonderrful dinner was served. All deliceous.
After which we all met in the parlour for coffee & brandy.
Then the next morning breakfast was perfect in every way. Loved everything about my stay
with my daughter.

Please folks ignore that one bad review as that lady was over the top and uncalled for.
Just my opinion as I am not related or paid for my review by the owners. I actually requested
TripAdvisor to remove it as I think it was outrageous. You have the right to rate someone low but NOT to attack them so viciously.

Room Tip: My favorite room is the Lee downstairs which has a gorgeous Half Tester Canopy bed with fantastic c...
