“The perfect Saturday morning - guaranteed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2012

As other reviewers have said, the place is very small - but what fabulous energy! Full of warm and friendly people in the 30-60 age range. One of the most interesting things to me was the contrast of the quiet, lonely, almost ghost town feeling outside on a sunny morning, then opening up the door to Fred's and it was The Grand Ole Opry - only cajun, with a beer in everyone's hand. Stay across the street at Hotel Cazan if you want to take a little break now and then.

“Just remember I told you to stop!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 29, 2012

You looking for cajun culture? Stop at the World Famous Fred's Lounge in downtown Mamou, Louisiana. My first visit was so rewarding I go back whenever I am in the area. Now to be in the area means you are lost. Just north of Eunice and Northwest of Opelousas. Both places that will serve you well on education of the Cajun Society.

Ok, Fred's, Small lounge, did I say small? Starts every Saturday morning about 8-8:30am with a cajun band in the middle of the dance floor, did I mention small lounge. Now fill it with 100-125 people, some Hot Damn, Bloody Mary(make mine Tall), oh yes, 10oz can beer of your choice, crazy people from Australia, Japan, Illinois, England, Nova Scotia, yes New York, and I forgot some bikers on a Saturday ride thru Cajun Country, and you have started your weekend off with a bang. About 9:30am the crowd is a crowd with dancing every where. Here comes Tante Sue leading a dance line with her Mardi Gras hat on and Hot Damn in her hand. Now the music quiets and stops, and, Oh I forgot, the local cajun(french) radio station is broadcasting the whole time. The announcer starts talking, and nobody knows what he is saying, but it is OK. Reminds me of the Grand Old Opry but Cajun. Smell the Culture. This is not a young crowd, but maybe 25-75 years old. Touch the Culture. On your way into town at the blinking CAUTION LIGHT, the speed limit is 45mph. Please obey. I forgot.
Enjoy and don't for get to drive south to visit Eunice, home of the Cajun Music Museum. It is great and the people are better. As they say, AAAyyyyeeeee!

A bucket list item! We were lucky enough to be there when the Cajun Tradition was playing. We will go again, and again.

“Jamming on a Saturday Morning”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 30, 2012

Wow! They have live music every Saturday from 10AM – 1:30PM which is broadcast over the radio. Fred’s has been the place to be since it opened in 1960. The place was jam packed with people drinking and dancing and passin’ a good time when we visited in Spring 2012.
