“A great place to stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 24, 2012

If you are looking for a cookie cutter place to stay with all kinds of amenities, someone to take your luggage to your room, matching towels, etc., this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for a unique place to stay, want to feel like you're staying in someone house, meet people from all over the world, with great music litterally on your doorstep, then book with the Blue Moon.

This is a hostel type place, meaning everybody shares the common areas of the house (kitchen, living room) but they have hostel type rooms (bunk beds) and private rooms. I choose the private balcony room with a full private bathroom (some rooms have a sink and toilet, but you use the shower in the common bathroom). The house is best described as funky. Every room is a different color, every bedroom is decorated differently, but the staff is great and very friendly both at the guesthouse and the adjoining bar. The Blue Moon has music usually from Wednesday's to Saturday's, sometimes on Sunday. The bar is only open during the evenings they have music. Oh, must not forget that front porch. I spent most afternoons after getting back from my sight seeing rocking away and relaxing, watching the world go by (on those days I didn't fall asleep in my chair).

The location is great. Borden's ice cream is right accross the street, as is a small Meditiranian take-out/grocery store. There is a bigger convenience store located just down the street from the guesthouse. Just at the corner of the guesthouse is located a sports bar/restaurant and another bar. Downtown Lafayette is pretty compact, quite walkable.

I will admit I had worries about the noise from the saloon as it's litterally on the back porch, but I knew what I was getting myself into. Yes, you will hear the music, doesn't matter what room you have. Some rooms might not be as bad if they are located on the other side of the house. But I never had a problem sleeping. Between being tired from my active day and the hum of the air conditioner, I slept no problem.

I met people from the states, Australia, Europe, and Israel just in my 4 day stay. Some people just stay overnight, some stay a few days like I did. Give this place a chance. Cookie cutter hotels can be found anywhere in the world, but this kind of place is unique.

I did not stay here, much to my sincere regret! This is perhaps one of the best music bars in the country. Not to be missed, whether you love Cajun with a touch of Zydeco or not. A great mix of locals and travelers, all here for the music. An insignificant cover charge, cheap beer, dancing, no frills. It's a destination unto itself. Damn! Why didn't I stay here!

Blue Moon Guest house is a lot about the music. It is a music venue after all. We went on a Monday Tuesday nights however so we missed it. It was a great place to use as a base for venturing out into Cajun country. The breakfast is more of a back packer's kind of arrangement with shared food available and space for stuff you buy (if you label it).
Great atmosphere and music themed rooms.

Room Tip: The Bois Sec is literally behind the stage so if you want to go to bed early go on a day when there...

Traveling through from key west to austin my family and I needed an inexpensive place to stay. I have never stayed at anything below at least sheraton standards and a hostle didn't seem to be my thing until I saw the pictures of the rooms, the location, and price. It was super clean, really friendly, people were doing yoga on deck. I wish I could stay longer. I have a 5 year old and have no hesitation coming with him again. A must for sure

The Blue Moon (on weekends at least) is first an foremost a music venue. Essentially the band is playing out the back door of the rooms. This is great if your plan is to see the particular band in town and you want to see the whole show. If not be ready for a noisy, funky experience.

My room was off the shared kitchen. It had a private half-bath, with shared showers. As other reviewers noted, do not expect amenities. The service level, for even the private rooms, is hostel level. And it is a nice hostel, no question. Free wireless, for instance. But prices for the private rooms were high. I prefer to stay in locally owned, non-chain places and am willing to pay a premium to do so--but the Blue Moon stretched (and broke) my sense of fair value. It is just plain overpriced. Watch their policies--it is pay in advance and no refunds. I ended up paying for an extra night that I did not use as I could not take the noise of the Blue Moon.

Given the layout of the place, my sense is that this is always a pretty busy/noisy spot. If that is what you want give it a shot--otherwise there may be better bases for enjoying Cajun Country.

Similar to a B&B stay without the breakfast. The Guest House is attached to the open air saloon - so don't go if you don't want to enjoy the music. We had a nice stay, and it was a fun new experience. Staff was very friendly. Rooms were clean and a bit goofy with the decorations, but hey - that is the idea.

Probably not the best place for kids.

Not for the quiet romantic stay.

The Blue Moon is one of those cool-in-an-underground-Parisian-nightclub kind of way. It's a hostel, so there's a community kitchen and bath. You share food cabinet space downstairs with whoever's backpacking across the United States from Ireland. But it has the best musical entertainment in Lafayette on Friday and Saturday nights, and is the preferred place to stay for the bands performing at Festival International de Louisiane (the festival grounds are right across the street, and they usually get together after the festival closes down for some improptu concerts at the Blue Moon).
