I found this Hotel via Groupon Hotels and I had not just a second thought about staying because of the negative reviews. I even called 72 h prior to inquire about canceling my reservation but still push through with the stay. The lobby has a character to which one will notice as you come in. There's no musty smell as with other reviews not until you come in the elevator-- the old hotel smell will drift. The room size was fine but the carpet was not very clean and not well fitted on the floor(several lumps is noticeable). The old hotel smell is also present, somehow pungy (i believe from the carpet thus needs more care/cleaning with a good deodorizer) which others described as urine like smell. The beds were comfy for us and linens smells fresh and clean. Breakfast has a fee but we did not eat here.
The front desk was ok but needs more welcoming gesture when accommodating guests that are checkin in. When I came, there were these couple who were complaining about their reservation by phone not being given despite their verification from the receiving person prior and the front desk did not very well addressed their issue. They saw me in the line but left the desk without even giving a I will be right with you moment to recognize my presence. The morning lady for the check out next day was more accommodating.
This hotel just needs a little bit more improvement and it will be a great place to stay.
For places not to be missed when you're here: There's a very good bakery called Poupart Bakery about 10min drive maybe from the Hotel which is incredibly has delish and affordable pastries from $3.99 and breads from $.99. Then don't miss the Tabasco Factory at Avery Island with a $1 toll to get in but all worth the visit. If you like the Tabasco sauce, you will love all the other products they have that you don't see in the groceries. Borden's Ice Cream House is also near with the classic interior and great place to chill out in a hot day. The large cup is like a pint if you wish to indulge and some heavy sweets and the large cone with the candy trims is a big hit to kids.
