My father-in-law booked our reservations on-line. He booked us two non-smoking rooms, yet somehow we ended up with smoking rooms. No offense to the smokers out there, but when you're a non-smoker with allergies, sleeping in a smoke-infested room is pure torture! We arrived after midnight, and I don't understand why there is no hotel personnel there to check you in. This hotel allows the security guard to check people in after office hours. Needless to say, he knew nothing about how to accommodate unsatisfied guests. We complained to him to no avail about the smoking rooms, and he said that's all they had left. That reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Jerry tells the car rental place, "Anyone can TAKE a reservation. It's the HOLDING of the reservation that seems to be the problem." Anyways, we spent the night at this place since it was getting too late to find another hotel. On our way to the rooms we encountered two skanks running down the hallway throwing cups of water at each other. The room my wife and I stayed in looked like it hadn't been thoroughly cleaned in a few years and in some of the pictures you will see that there appears to be some fresh stains on the chair. (Perhaps of bodily fluids.) The kitchenette and bathroom were disgusting. There was a buildup of some kind of scum around the perimeter of where the floor meets the walls. There were no pots, pans or cooking utensils of any kind. The room just reaked of smoke and anything that we brought into the room for longer than 5 minutes reaked of smoke. The other pictures I've posted are just to give you a better perspective of the room. When you look at the Sun Suites web-site, their pictures make the rooms appear to be quite spacious. On the contrary, the rooms are quite small. In the picture with the TV, there is about 2 feet more of space over to the right. The bathroom is tiny. The walls are very thin. Our neighbors kept us up until 3am with their talking and laughter.
The next day we walked around the neighborhood a bit and discovered that this hotel was in the projects. There were lots of seedy looking characters walking around. When the office opened, we asked if anything could be done about our rooms. They said they had nothing else available, but would try fogging our rooms with some kind of deodorizing stuff. After they did this the rooms were totally unbearable. The deodorant was overwhelming, and made us all gag. We asked if they would transfer our reservation to another location in Metarie and they obliged. The Sun Suites in Metarie was 10 times better, but it cost us a lot more. It was a lot cleaner and in a better part of town. I think from now on I will not be staying at budget hotels. My advice to you if you want to stay at Sun Suites in New Orleans...proceed with caution!
