“Diner food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

They were open until 10:00. Came for a late po-boy sandwich which was just o.k. Nothing to write home about, but it was good.

“Quick breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

The biscuits and gravy saved the day on our second visit. The eggs are over done and the bacon is dry.

“Good food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

The food was very good here. The wait staff and cooks were a little slow. I would definitely eat here again for breakfast.

“Good food-Good Quantity reasonable prices”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2012

Stopped for dinner twice here and had two good meals. 50's motif. Food is cooked AFTER you order so don't expect fast food or "express" service. Very large orders and priced reasonably. Country fried steak was EXCELLENT

“We liked it a lot!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 17, 2012

We just returned from breakfast at the City Diner in Harahan and we liked it a lot! This neat little 50's style diner is tucked away in the Elmwood industrial park, but it is actually convenient from all directions. Parking is plentiful, the place is clean and well maintained, the furnishings are comfortable, and the ambiance is friendly.

Open 24 hours, it's great that you can order any item on the extensive breakfast/lunch/dinner menu at any time. Another plus is that you can have an adult beverage with your meal - any meal, including breakfast. But don't get me wrong, this is neither a dive nor a haven for loud obnoxious binge drinkers, but I can envision myself having a bloody Mary with my breakfast some late weekend morning, or a cold draft with my lunch or dinner some day.

The service is adequate, with the strength of the waitstaff being in their recommendations. Our waitress confessed that she used to frequent the place so much as a customer, and she enjoyed the food so much, that she applied for employment.

Food quality is good, and servings are large to gargantuan. I recommend the Crab Cake Benedict, which is described as two seasoned polenta cakes topped with crab cakes, poached eggs, and Cajun cream sauce; the crabmeat is plentiful and everything else is in excellent proportion and flavor. Side order options include either grits or hash browns; my nice-sized serving of shredded hash browns was cooked nicely and not too greasy, but they would have benefitted from being fresh rather than frozen, and from the addition of onions and bell pepper. Maybe you should try the grits.

Also recommended is their head-turning pancake, which actually IS the size of a large pizza; in fact, it is served on a large pizza pan and unless your name is Adam Richman (a la TV's "Man vs. Food") or Takeru Kobayashi (the world hot-dog eating champion), you will take much of it home in a pizza box (no kidding). But other than its size, the pancake is fluffy and delicious, especially when covered with blueberries or one of their other toppings. Other interesting breakfast choices include the shrimp and grits, the City Benedict (andouille sausage, spinach, blackened tomatoes, poached eggs, and hollandaise sauce on an English muffin), and the $10.99 Big Country Breakfast with which - if you can possibly eat it all - you get a free t-shirt, photo, and breakfast.

The bottom line is that you can enjoy a big, delicious breakfast any time day or night at the City Diner in Elmwood.

TIP #1- Tell the waitress what you like, and trust her recommendations.
TIP #2 - Our experienced waitress suggests to put your inevitable pancake leftovers in the freezer and heat it up in the oven for breakfast another day.
