“We fell in love”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 7, 2012

It was our first trip to Maldives as we wanted to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversary. We were recommended Dhigu over Veli by our tour agent and we can't thank her enough. Dhigu looks more "poshed" than Veli which looks a little run down and tired. We stayed for 4 nights and didn't want to go home.
We stayed at the Sunset Water villa and it was an amazing experience waking up to the clear blue sky and sea... having rays and sharks swimming past our villa. Awesome!
We also went diving and had an amazing dive instructor Ella who was every so patient with us, cos we have not dived for 15 years.
We also did the sunset fishing, though disappointed that the rest on the boat caught fish but we didn't... nevertheless, it was an amazing experience fishing in the dark.
We did a half board but food was not spectacular. Potato chips were US$7 a tin and coke at US$5. I certainly would buy my own stash and bring in next time.

We did a couple spa too and it was so nice to receive a massage while looking through the hole and see the nemos and fish swimming around.

On the whole, the service staff were polite and detailed. I can't count the number of times they came to our room to make it up or top up our water.

We stayed here for the first week of our honeymoon. We chose this resort b/c of the surfing program - and it was excellent! Tropic Surf run an impressive operation- very professional. The hotel itself is in a fabulous location, better location than the Four Season's Kuda Hurra (another good option for surfing). The next week we stayed at the Four Season's two Maldives properties- and compared to the FS, the Anantara experience really doesn't compare.

The staff is friendly, but not at all at the same caliber as the Four Seasons (which overall is not that much more $$ than the Anantara). Also the food was not very impressive, and the lack of environmental awareness at the hotel was disheartening.....small plastic water bottles used for all drinking water (talk about wasteful). The water on the island is not purified so you can't even brush your teeth with it. They also spray the island with some form of pesticide every evening at 5pm...I asked the hotel staff what they were spraying since it felt so toxic, and no one had an answer.

Also, just to be honest, the hotel seems to draw Islamic families, with women in head scarves and even full burkas...which adds a strange feeling to the resort. I felt uncomfortable even walking around in a sun dress, like I was being disrespectful. The Maldives is a 100% Islamic nation, so it is nice to feel a bit more of the 'local' culture...but as an American woman, it felt a little strange. The Four Season's had much more of a Western vibe, with more Australians and Asians.

Overall, the location is great, but I think it should be cheaper for what you get....and I think they need to up their environmental commitments.

Stayed for 11 nights in June in a Sunset Beach Villa. Personally I marginally prefer the sunset side of the island. Sunset side looks out on the open sea and spa, while the sunrise side looks out on the neighbouring Naladhu and staff islands. Beach is good on either side though. Probably not a place for snorkelling fanatics as the local reef is limited, but not a problem for us.

Villas have most things you need (perhaps slightly lacking on storage space if I'm being really petty) and are well maintained & serviced. The free In villa WiFi is reasonably fast & reliable, which we found useful.

Plenty of food options & the standard is good, without being upscale. Reasonably priced by Maldives standards. Two restaurants were closed for refurbishment while we were there, but selected favourites from their menus were available elsewhere & a free glass of champagne was offered as compensation every night.

The resort lacked a bit of atmosphere as is was the off season and half the guests were Chinese & didn't seem to frequent the bar area, but we still had a good time. There was a lovely Indonesian lady (Dhin) working in the Aqua Bar who looked after us very well despite always working tirelessly.

Spa over-water setting is nice. The range of massages is slightly limited compared to some other resports, obviously speciallising in Thai style like the rest of the Anantara group.

Overall, a lovely place to stay for a relaxing time without paying too outrageous a price.

The hotel is brilliant. Location a privilege. The design of the villas are amazing. I love the different restaurants and the ambience. The people and staff were by far the best I ever met. House keeping was amazing and every day manage to pull out a surprise. The gift that gave to us on the last day with the note its something I will always remember. That card is still in my desk.

Room Tip: Sunrise beach villa are amazing and the little jungle that is in front of you before the beach its s...

We truly enjoyed our stay at Anantara Dhigu where we celebrated two of my friends' birthdays. I would recommend hiring a boat and spotting the spinner dolphins. The island is very rich with marine life. At night if you're lucky you can spot baby sharks by the jetty and sting rays. Great holiday destination for a group of friends and very friendly staff!

Room Tip: Beach villas have their own outdoor bathroom which was amazing! Try to book a room facing sunset!
