“Worth every penny!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2013

I love taking pictures and I especially love taking pictures of flowers sculptures etc. This is huge. Almost botanical gardens. The house is very nice. One of the few homes that allow indoor photography. Lots of ponds. Water. Flowers. Plenty of benches or seating along the paths. Theee is a restaurant. Very highly rated. Didnt go there though. Nice gift shop. Worth the trip!

“Furnishings? Yes! History? No!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

My expectations were WAY off on this, my second sugar cane plantation house tour. I wanted to learn history-- the economics of this agriculture business, the history of slavery here, the relationships of the house owners and society folks in New Orleans. Nope! Sadly, this is just like any Junior League house decorating tour. The grounds are gorgeous and the 500 year old live oaks are magnificent. A very pleasant tour, but sadly, no history. The gift shop is enormous. If you like shopping and knick knacks, you will love it. The whole enterprise is an enormous marketing opportunity for the owners. Lucky them.

“Southern Charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

I just returned from a 3 day tour of the local plantations while staying at the Bocage Plantation located just down the street. Houmas House Plantation and their gardens were absolutely breathtaking. The tour guide gave the tour extra southern charm and flavor with her period dress, southern accent, and tid bits of historical information and humor.

“Absolutely stunning example of a plantation house and chance to touch and feel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 16, 2013 via mobile

Absolutely adored this place. Superb example of a plantation house. Not roped off but able to touch and feel a slightly eclectic but fascinating collection of furniture and collectibles, some of them placed with no small degree of sardonic humour. Only wish I'd tripped over the owner and his dogs like we did the resident artist/gardener and his dog, to discuss the provenance of some of the collection. The guide was great. I wish we'd been able to linger longer looking at fascinating pieces. The gardens are superb. The restaurant is excellent. Pop across the road and climb the levee for a sweeping view of old man river. Strongly recommend this on the tourist dance card.

“A Visit to the Past; A Vision of the Future”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2013

Houmas House is approximately 45 minutes from New Orleans by car. It is well worth the trip if you enjoy old plantations and exceptionally beautiful gardens. Kevin Kelly bought the property in 2003, after it had gone through several owners including the Houmas Indians and he has been improving it ever since. He is far from finished. At the time of our visit, he was about to open three new, connecting villas which will be ideal for destination weddings.

The original property consisted of over 300,000 acres....98,000 of which were planted with sugar cane. The developed property today is 38 lush acres of gardens, ponds and live oak trees. The original mansion was not destroyed in the Civil War, nor was it damaged by the devestating floods of 1927. The grounds were flooded and many of the original live oaks are now gone.

The mansion, The Sugar Palace, has been beautifully restored and furnished with authentic period pieces. In 1963 Bette David made the movie, "Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte" on location at the Houmas House Plantation and the bedroom where she slept has been preserved.

Le Petite Houmas House Restaurant serves an excellent lunch and a Sunday brunch from 11 to 3 o'clock.

The extensive gardens are equally as impressive as the buildings with ponds, pagodas, fountains and statuary as well as tropical native flowers and vegetables. Some of the live oak trees are over 400 years old.

We took a tour through the mansion led by "Judy", a delightful and elegant lady who not only showed us the home but played the piano and sang for us.

Houmas House is definitely "The Crown Jewel of Louisiana's River Road"
