This review is pretty long because we stayed 4 nights in the hotel, gambled at the casino on 3 separate occasions, ate at the buffet once for supper, had room service several times, ordered take-out from the bar and grill, and tried the fare at the coffee shop. It's a little disorganized, but I tried to get the main points in.
We arrived very late on the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. The check-in staff was very friendly. The facility is new, nice, clean, and decorated beautifully.
We brought our 3 year old daughter, because we did not realize this casino/hotel was very kid-unfriendly. I am all for adult get-aways, but L'auberge needs to make that more clear in advertising and on their website. If we had known, we would have made reservations elsewhere, and stayed there during an adult-only adventure. There are no kid activities available, and children are not allowed at the buffet restaurant. Like I said, I am completely fine with that, I even appreciate it, I just wish we had known in advance.
We had room-service 3 times. The food was decent and the service was very friendly and fast. It was a little over-priced for what you get, but I expect that from room service anywhere.
The buffet was great, and was pretty much like the other casino buffets I have tried, except for the desserts - they were above and beyond, in both taste and presentation.
The "complimentary" types of services at the hotel really need some work. I will share just a couple of several examples.
There are no coffee pots in the rooms. I thought that would be fine, as they supposedly have coffee every morning in the lounge area on your floor, right next to the elevator. This is a bit inconvenient, if you are like me, and prefer to have your first cup prior to getting dressed, but regardless, not once during our stay were we able to get coffee that way. When we checked in, we were told it would be available until 11, we slept in the first day, and tried to get coffee at 10:30, however none was available. When we asked someone, they told us coffee service ended at 10:30. The next morning, I went for coffee around 9, and everything was set up, but drained empty, and no one was around to ask about refreshing the supply. I opened the cabinet under the pot to see if there was extra located there, and was greeted with a nasty hand written-note about being on camera and being a thief. We went down to the VIP lounge, where we were told we could get some coffee, but the receptionist there was very rude, and didn't know how to work the machine, or refill the water. We ended up buying coffee at the little coffee shop on two separate occasions. The first time, it was okay, nothing exceptional, but drinkable coffee. The second time, it was the worst coffee I have ever tasted in my life. It was beyond burnt and old. So bad, that I took one sip and dumped the rest down the drain. My husband had walked over to the shop and brought it back up to me in the room, so rather than walk back over across the way, to the casino side, I ended up paying over $10 for a small pot of room service coffee.
We also forgot to bring a hair brush, so we asked for anything that would work, even just a cheap complimentary comb that hotels often have would have been fine, but apparently, besides what is already in your room (basic soap, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body wash), the hotel offers no complimentary ANYTHING that you may forget. We paid $12 in the gift shop for a dollar store quality hairbrush.
After our second night here, on Friday, the cleaning staff was extremely rude to me. We had "do not disturb" on our door, because my daughter was taking a nap. As I was quietly trying to open my door and get down the hall, a staff member started loudly asking if we needed our room cleaned. I said "yes, but not right now." She glared at me and huffed like I said something terrible, so I explained that my daughter was taking a nap, but that our room had not been cleaned or freshened since we arrived, and that we really needed towels and the trash taken out. She mumbled something under her breath and huffed away. About 30 minutes later, I asked a supervisor I happened to see going down the hall inspecting rooms if our room could still be cleaned, and she said they would definitely get to it. We left shortly after, and returned a couple hours later. Our beds were made (sheets were not changed, but that wasn't a problem) and the trash was taken out, but that was it - there were no fresh towels or washcloths, the trash cans were in the middle of the room floor, some of the dirty towels were still in the room, no clean glasses were left, the dirty glasses were still on the counter, none of the surfaces were wiped clean. Needless to say, we were not impressed by the job. I remember thinking, "how strange, the rest of the hotel and the casino is immaculately clean, but not our room." I have had far superior room cleanings at a far cheaper motel.
The rooftop pool and cabana area on the 12th floor of the hotel is very lovely, and my favorite place in the whole facility. But, the bar was closed the entire time. I guess it is only open in the summer. A hot-tub and year-round bar service there would have been nice and much-appreciated by every guest I made small-talk with during our stay.
While I am on the subject of the rooftop area...
I am a smoker. The hotel is non-smoking. That is okay with me, when I travel, I always get a non-smoking room anyway, and smoke outside, I dislike a smoky room, and do not allow smoking in any part of my house, so I have no problem with the policy. The first 3 nights we were there, I would simply ride the elevator up to the roof-top lounge area and have a smoke or two. The lights were on, the doors were unlocked, and no one bothered me or said anything to me, so I assumed it was not a problem. On the last night of our stay, I went up a little after midnight, and was out there not even long enough to finish a cigarette, when an employee walked up on me, seemingly out of nowhere, startled me pretty bad, and informed me that I was not supposed to be out there, that I was "showing up on the security cameras" and that the area was closed. Creepy and inconsistent.
The casino is nice. The self-serve beverages is a great touch. The servers were polite, but service for alcoholic beverages was really slow. We mostly played slots, came out slightly ahead, and over-all had a good time, and would return to the casino. I'm not sure we'd ever return for the hotel or food.
