We drove to D.I.’s after the Rendevous de Cajuns live radio show in Eunice last Saturday night. The place was packed. Put our name on the list and were told there would be a 25-minute wait, but we could get a beer from a nearby window and wait on the front porch. While there, drinking our $2 Buds, two local men struck up a conversation with my wife and I. Were we tourists? Yes, from Wisconsin. They then told us all about the area and about the local delicacy, crawfish. In time, we were seated on the edge of a dance floor, cajun band playing and kids dancing. My wife ordered a huge platter of boiled crawfish, and struggled to eat them. After a few minutes, the two men we met on the porch came over from across the room and patiently showed us how to twist off the tails and extract the tasty meat. While we might have been the only non-locals in the room, we felt welcome and almost like family. The bill for a crawfish pie appetizer, two salads, a dinner of crawfish etoufee and another of 3 pounds of boiled crawfish, and two Buds, was $35. We’ll be back.
