Before you stay at Cave Spring take some time to learn more about its history and the area of Smiths Grove, KY and Cave City, KY. Take a look at the application for the Bed and Breakfast's status as a historical site with the National Registry of Historical Homes to find extensive information about two decades of history related to the buildings, cave and land.
Do not follow Google or Mapquest directions or GPS directions. Once you get to Squires Grove follow "Main Street" past the historic churches and turn RIGHT (not left as the directional arrow points) and follow directions found on website for Cave Spring Farm B&B. It would be helpful if owner could put a small directional sign at this intersection leading right.
I found the Cave Spring Farm Bed and Breakfast to be a charming presentation of rural farm life. Myself and my three kids ranging in age from 1 to 10 stayed at the Little House in the Woods for two nights. Based upon former reviews I was expecting a situation far worse than what I encountered.
It was clear that the owner does listen and I noticed that there was NO camper near the cabin. The owner does own a rather nice mid-size RV that appears to be functional and mobile that is parked in the driveway of the main house. The linens were clean and freshly laundered. The bed sheets were actually high quality and were very comfortable to sleep on. The "hole" referenced previously in the floor of the upstairs bedroom is nothing more than an unfinished floor heat vent covered over by carpet. While I would prefer to see the heat vent finished it is important to note that there is no visible cut on the ceiling of the first floor. So, one will not "fall through". Unfortunately, this was just a poor choice that was neither completed or restored.
If one is expecting a luxury cabin they will be severely disappointed. This cabin is "charming", "updated rustic".
My first impressions of the cabin was the lovely old wood floors. The kitchen and bathroom are updated and modern in appearance. The kitchen was stocked with two pots and pans and I brought and left as a gift a new set of pots and pans. The appliances are newer and easy to use. The bathroom features a jacuzzi tub that we did not utilize, a contemporary style pedestal sink with chrome fixtures and lots of clean towels and washclothes. The living room features a gas fireplace. The furniture was older and the artistic/designer side of me could easily see this space improved by better suited furniture to include a sleeper love seat to offer more sleeping options for families traveling with kids.
No mice or rodents or signs of mice or rodents seen...did encounter a few small bugs but for the cabin to be "in the woods" this is to be expected. They were easily taken care of. The cabin itself was clean and I walked around in white socks which picked up very little dirt.
My kids loved the rescue horses on this farm and I applaud the owners for their work to give these creatures a 2nd chance. Over the course of two days the kids had a lot of fun feeding the horses over 7 pounds of carrots and 5 pounds of apples. =)
We also encountered a beautiful and ultra-friendly cat that acted as "guard" cat and slept on our front porch.
It is important to note that the owner sold the rights to the cave entrance on property to Western Kentucky University Dec. 2008. Cave tours are still available by appointment.
There were a lot of birds on this property and this would serve as an ideal spot for a bird watching weekend.
While staying here, we made the short drive to Cave City to visit Dinosaur World and spent some time driving around the area. I would recommend others to do this as you can find "pick your own" farms for strawberries and other fruits/vegetables as well as fresh from the garden produce stands with ready-for-purchase items.
Definitely stop in, sample and stock up on Chasers Chocolate at Cave City, KY. They have a unique signature sweet DARK chocolate that is heavenly.
The location of this B&B / Cabins is ideal for those who want to spend some time in the Cave City / Bowling Green area which has alot to offer. Squires Grove is between Cave City and Bowling Green and near the Caves (Mammoth, Lost River, etc.), Corvette Museum, Dinosaur World, and much more!
