“Historic Hotel in Downtown Louisville”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2012

If you like staying in historic old downtown hotels, the Seelbach should definitely be on your list. Don't let the fact that is has been around for about 100 years fool you. It definitely still has the grandeur of a stately old dame but with modern touches. The bar is a must with a full selection of local bourbons. The rooms can be a bit small, typical of an older hotel, but well appointed. The service is first rate and the Oakroom restaurant should fit anyones appetite. Even the informal lunch restaurant was first rate and serves a great inexpensive hamburger. This hotel is also well located for exploring downtown Louisville which you can do withour moving your car thanks to a great trolly system. Be advised that parking is either valet or in the next door gargage but either is a bit pricy. Great experience in downtown Louisville.

Room Tip: A room away from the elevator or front of the hotel is probably preferred

My husband had a meeting at the Seelbach this week and I went with him. But I came home early because the area was simply horrible with little if anything to do. The hotel has been very nicely restored and I found the accommodations very good. But it seemed for a 4 star hotel it was not run with people who are highly trained at their jobs. While the people, for example, at the front desk were nice and polite, they were not sophisticated, highly trained employees you find at other high end hotels. And there were other examples of this throughout the hotel although I will say our experience with housekeeping was excellent. So overall, it seems the owners are trying to cut corners to run this beautiful hotel. BUT the biggest issue was that the location stinks! I seriously do not know how this hotel is going to make a go of it being located where it is. It is obvious this area has seen better days and there are abandoned buildings all around with no shopping at all. The only shopping I found was a CVS Pharmacy up the block and yet the type of people in the store made me very uncomfortable. And on the street, I felt like I was in an area where muggings might be a threat. My experience in downtown Louisville wasn't much better than my experience with downtown Detroit. The owners of this hotel may be focussing their attention on business people who are there merely to work and nothing else except when there is the occasional event that takes place. So future travelers, beware!

I love older, elegant hotels, but this one is not comfortable. I had two rooms on different floors, since I politely asked to switch rooms after the jetliner like HAVC noise kept me up the first night. Both rooms had garbage on the floor and one had a clump of hair from a previous guest. One bed was comfy and one was a giant old pillow on a bed frame. The both shower floors were slimey and sticky--gross. The lobby staff were fine, they should fire houskeeping.

Room Tip: Higher rooms have less hvac and guest noise.

Nice place. We stayed here for Thunder over Louisville and were able to walk to all of the attractions. The rooms are small, but nice. Everything is clean. Parking was easy. There is a city parking garage behind the hotel.

this was the only hotel i would stay at in louisville for a long time. 1.) its a hilton and I'm an honors high honors member. 2.) its right at 4th street live, so in the heart of the action. 3.) has a classic bar that has great drinks and food. 4.) service has always been very good. 5.) comfy beds

what i have been disappointed in lately. 1.) on demand tv gone, so like any hampton inn tv, no guide no rental movies. 2.) the elevators are small and thats fine(charm), but they are constantly going down and needing to be worked on. 3.) no upgrade automatically when there was obvious space, i have to pry to get it shouldn't with diamond status. 4.) food list, wine list severely chopped down. 5.) concierge level amenities starting to disappoint not even worth, the food.

they seem to be taking steps down instead of up, and this hotel is to great to do that. the brown hotel has it dominated at the moment, except for location

Room Tip: a lot of queen beds here, try for a king or push to upgrade into a jr suite rooms are small

We were in Louisville this weekend for Thunder Over Louisville. Due to the extreme traffic load expected after the festivities, we opted to stay downtown for the night. When my husband told me we had reservations at the Seelbach, I was anticipating...well, more than we received. The hotel is very old and, as a result, the room was quite small. The bathroom was more than likely the tiniest hotel bathroom we have ever seen! Also, there was a step up to the bathroom right inside the door, a fact that I hoped would not come back to haunt us in the middle of the night! I realize there would have been no bathroom attached to the hotel room when the building was built but, as I sat on the side of the bed and surveyed the space, I could visualize how the room could be restructured to take up excess floor space near the door and closet, to allow for a larger bathroom. I would have much rather had a larger, more functional bathroom than that excess floor space near the door and closet. Another major problem we were faced with was the fact that our room faced the street side where an entertainment district was located. After the fireworks show, a rock band set up stage and was playing music so loudly that you could hear it quite clearly in our hotel room. We inquired at the front desk as to whether there were another room available but, of course, with the pre-Derby festivities, there were no other rooms available. The desk clerk said that he had no way of knowing how late the band would play but thought they would probably be finished by 2 am! Thankfully, they finished some time after midnight, so most of the night was spent in peace and quiet. The room was very clean and the beds were acceptably comfortable. The staff was friendly and courteous. All in all, due to the bathroom problem, I would not stay here again. I would recommend if someone were to make a reservation at the Seelbach that they certainly need to request a room away from the entertainment district!

Room Tip: Rooms away from the entertainment district and maybe with better bathroom facilities.
