“Nice hotel, shady area”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2011

This is a tough one.
The hotel was very nice, fairly new. The staff was excellent. Parking was easy. The complimentary breakfast was nice. My room was well appointed and rather large.
The bad thing, I'd say is that it's in the wrong place. I was staying here while at a convention at the Kentucky Center. The block between the hotel and the convention center, was basically, as a pervious commenter put it, a pawn shop and an adult video store (according to the neon lights, it also offered peep shows). There was one night when I just didn't feel safe walking back to my hotel, so I probably wouldn't recommend this one. Not because of anything that was the hotel's fault. It's just the neighborhood.

Springhill Suites is part of the Marriott family of hotels. You know what to expect at the price ($120 a night for a two-queen suite): clean, comfortable, spacious (by UK standards) rooms, a small gym, a small pool, standard-issue US hotel breakfast (waffles, bagels, cereal, eggs, sausage patties etc). But here's a couple of funny things about this hotel. First, it's in what we might call a little enclave of Marriotts and other hotels, holding down a few blocks near the I65, not far from downtown. Now, although it's not unusual for hotels to cluster like this in America, I think it is less usual for them to occupy a part of the city which is, frankly, crummy. Step out of your hotel and you're into a little neighbourhood of pawn shops and, yes, porn shops. And empty lots. And, a couple of blocks of nervous walking north, there are boarded up buildings. The trolly car along Market and Main doesn't seem to work, has no timetable, turns up randomly. What's wrong with Louisville? you start to ask yourself. So you decide to hightail it back to the hotel for a swim. The second strange thing about this hotel is that it shares its pool with one of the other Marriotts - Fairfield Inns and Suites, which is joined on to Springhill Suites. Turning the wrong way as I left the pool, I found myself in a slightly less well appointed lobby that wasn't the one for my hotel. For a moment I was completely disorientated, then I realised that I had wandered into the lobby of Fairfield Inns and Suites by accident. My next revelation was that I had paid probably $25 a night more for Springhill Suites than I would have for Fairfield Inns and Suites and got the exact same pool and gym! Anyway, I am drawing comfort from the notion that our room was nicer for the $$$$. On the up side, the room was genuinely nice, breakfast was free and plentiful, internet was free, parking was $9 a day (not awful). On the down side, room 213 suffers from traffic noise, malfunctioning air conditioning (either on all the time, creating an arctic atmosphere or off, creating a mini-bayou). And, you know what? In the end, Louisville isn't all it's cracked up to be either... but maybe I'll save that for another review.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that is away from E. Jefferson.

This was my first venture into a Springhill Suites and I honestly stayed here because of points. I had a meeting at the Galt House and figured I could hike it (it was a long, long hike -- but it included a lovely pass by the erotica store on the way).

If you've never visited a Springhill Suites before (I assume they're similar), this will be a bit of a surprise. It's very modern inside with a separate toilet area with a tiny airline sink and another shower/dressing area. You sort of feel like you're in a ship stateroom. There's a glass-ish wall between the sleeping area and the living room/work area. It was certainly clean and well-maintained.

It shares a building with a Fairfield Inn and there are two separate front desks. Make sure you go to the correct one.

There's also something funky about the parking. They tell you they're going to add on -- I think it's $9 per day -- to park and that your room key opens the gate. Except the gate was never closed and it looked like the Fairfield guests were parking for free in the same garage. Anyway, they never charged me on my bill, so I didn't raise a fuss over it.

The area around the hotel is a little seedy, although it looks like they're trying to improve it. There's a gas station/mini-mart across the street in one direction and a Hampton Inn in the other direction. There's a White Castle, McDonalds and the aforementioned adult novelty store and a liquor store nearby, but not much else. You can hike down to the 4th Street area with its upscale themed chain restaurants and bars and it's not too far if you're going over to the medical campus in Louisville, but you'll need a car to go anywhere else. I did walk home from 4th Street one night, but I'm not sure I'd want to do it regularly.

The hotel itself is fine for a single traveler, but might get crowded with more than a couple. And just keep an eye open if walking about after dark. Otherwise, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

This hotel was very nice and clean. I would not classify it along with a Four Seasons, however for the classification of hotel that it is, it was great. The rooms and property were VERY clean. The breakfast was also good. The location of the hotel was also awesome to the fourth street area. Regarding the reviews of loudness, I never heard anything and we were there during DERBY weekend, with a sold out hotel and a concert going on nearby with tons of traffic. DID NOT HEAR A THING. We stayed on the 7th floor so maybe that had to do with it as well. All in all great hotel, clean and would recommend as long as you don't have to pay to much. Also, when getting breakfast, you can ask the kitchen staff for a tray and load up and bring all the food you want down to the room while your significant other sleeps in! :)

Room Tip: Ask for room on 7th floor

The rooms at the hotel were very nice. They were clean, spacious and accomidating. The bad parts were the halls were very noisy on saturday night from midnight on thru the night. The parking garage was totally full Saturday night, and while the hotel did solve the problem we ended up parking about a block away. The breakfast buffet was very good. The location of the hotel is close to all of downtown activities, but on Friday night their was a large group of teen agers (approx 100 or more congregating in front of the hotel area), was a very unsettling feeling as numerous police cars and vans were called to break up the disturbance.

Room was 1970's chic, with okay sleeping arrangements, but value for a suite was good. No complaints on location, service, or staff, but the parking garage attached is not suitable for anything larger than a Toyota Prius, and it is $9 a night and $20 a day to park there. For Marriot to have their name on this hotel, I was expecting a lot more. When I damaged my F-150 pulling out of the garage because of a faulty design, their management said "This happens all the time, we will pay for it," but when it was time for their insurance company to get involved, my claim was denied.

I visited Louisville for one night to take my mom to a concert at the Yum Center. The location of the hotel was perfect, walking distance to both the Yum Center and 4th Street Live. The area feels very safe, is well lit, and clean. There is also a gas station right behind the hotel that stays open really late.

Getting there was a bit of a trick, but that might have been because of my own navigational skills. We missed the hotel the first time because it's connected to the Fairfield inn, and the parking deck was not blatantly obvious to get into. However, after a few rides around the block, we figured it out. Also, the streets are much wider than those in downtown Atlanta, which was nice.

The staff were very nice. They called to check on our satisfaction about 20 minutes after we checked into the room. The rooms was spacious, and included a mini fridge and microwave/coffee station. The tv was a flatscreen swivel tv. We missed the buffet breakfast, but the breakfast lounge was huge and the smell made me sorry I missed it. The room also had an ipod dock, which was great!

Negatives: we were in a suite facing Jefferson street. I am a very heavy sleeper, but I couldn't sleep until I used ear plugs because of the noise. Also, if you are sleeping in, I recommend using your door hanger to let the housekeeping know. Although, they were very nice and it was not a big deal. Also, parking is $9, but that is to be expected when you are this far downtown.
