“Pretty good place for a spa weekend”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2010

My wife and I stayed at Griffin Gate looking for a relaxing spa weekend. The hotel delivered on many counts. The spa is terrific. A wonderful place to relax and get a good massage. The atmosphere is perfect.

We liked the hotel, but must admit that the rooms are smaller than we expect at a hotel that prides itself on being a resort, and the bathrooms are ridiculously small. Also, there is no sound buffering between rooms. You will have no difficulty hearing your neighbors.

It's also worth nothing that the hotel clearly caters itself to smaller sized conventions and large meetings. Thus, don't be surprised if the place is over-run with partyers. During our stay, there was a noisy collection of evangelical church women (and a rude and nasty bunch they were, too). Before you book, you might want to find out what large grooups will be in the facility at the same time.

The restaurant, JW Steakhouse, is far better than the usual hotel restaurant, with a respectable wine list. We enjoyed eating there. A tad on the expensive side, but the same quality you would find at Morton's or Ruth's Chris (again -- the bar next door can be noisy and the lighting is a little harsh).

All in all, a positive experience.

I've stayed here many times over the past year or so, as it is convenient to my client's office. If I think about it, this is probably the hotel I've stayed at most in my entire life. It's rather comforting to know exactly what to expect. The staff are always very pleasant - the front desk is staffed by the same sort of fresh-faced, perky kids that you also find at Disney hotels. They keep carafes of lemonade and iced tea ready in the lobby at all times. The restaurant does a great breakfast buffet, serviceable lunch, and passable dinner - but what else do you expect from a hotel restaurant? That's why you rent a car, and drive downtown for dinner. The rooms are Marriott rooms - big enough, clean enough, with mostly everything working. I wouldn't make a special trip to Lexington to stay at this hotel, but I don't at all mind staying there when I find myself in town.

The facility is nice enough, as are the rooms (although the bathroom was miniscule and the mattress hard as a rock), but this was not a pleasant experience. We asked how late the restaurant would be open and were told 10:30 p.m., but when we arrived at 9 p.m., the restaurant had closed and we were directed to eat in the bar. We were given the restaurant menu to order from, which is ridiculously overpriced for the mediocre quality of the food served ($5 for an overcooked baked potato?), but then we began to notice other people being served "bar food" (sandwiches, appetizers). We were more than a little annoyed that we were not even told we had other options for dinner -- ones that were probably much less expensive and more suitable to late night dining.

The next morning, all the water in the hotel was off. We can certainly not blame the hotel for what was probably a city or county problem, but the situation was handled very badly. The hotel did not notify us about the problem -- we had to ask what was going on. And then we were told that there was no estimated time for the problem to be resolved and to just sit tight. No backup plan to at least help us brush our teeth. Finally we got tired of waiting and asked for bottles of water to be delivered to our room. They did deliver three 16 ounce bottles of water, and we were able to brush our teeth and get out of the place.

Perhaps this was just an unfortunate series of events, and perhaps we could have demanded some adjustment to the already excellent rate we secured through Priceline, but since the "resort" had not been especially accommodating until that point, the argument did not seem worth our time.

Great location, right off the highway. Were upgraded for no extra cost to two kings when we checked in. Indoor pool was warm enough to get right in.

Griffin Gate Resort was everything that it proposes to be. My husband and myself traveled with about 150 business associates and spouses to the Lexington, KY area for 5 days. The room was the usual hotel-size, but it included a desk area, a comfortable chair/ottoman, and roomy shower/bath area. The closet was small due to ironing board, etc, but adequate. The single sink area was workable. The king bed was unbelievably comfortable. And we were located across from the Concierege room so "goodies" were available whenever we arrived back at the hotel. The room was cleaned each day and fresh towels with bath products replenished. A value for the stay. The dining room however was quite expensive, although the service was perfect. The food all tasted the same for all the meals that we ate at banquets, breakfasts, lunches, restaurant, and snacks. This is the only area that could use improvement and more creativity.

Check in was easy and the staff was friendly. They noticed we had a baby and asked if we wanted a pack and play before we had the chance to ask.

The first thing we noticed when we came into the room was the chilled plate with 5 enormous chocolate covered strawberries and a chilled bottle of wine. The room was comfortable and quiet. Our daughter loved the pool.

We got married in front of the mansion a year ago and planned to have dinner here on our 1 year anniversary. I have to admit the wedding was beautiful and will never be able to put into words how great the staff at the restaurant was to us. But the Marriott should be ashamed how the treat their guests. Their wedding planner didn't show up on the wedding day! The attitude from the front desk staff is appaulling. When you plan your wedding through them they give a gift certificate to come back a stay on your anniversary and have dinner at the restaurant. Lets just say its been a year and the front desk staff hasn't changed and the masion restaurant is closed. We spent around 30,000 at Marriott on our wedding (rooms, catering, bar, etc) Do yourself a favor, go somewhere else!
