“a hidden surprise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2013

Convenient for Ironbridge, a friend and I stayed here for a night because we could not stay where we had intended and what a stroke of luck! Yes, some of the rooms are small but it's a very old building and small spaces and sloping floors are what comes with that but the homemade biscuits on the hospitality tray more than makes up for that - unless you really are hard to please!

Our evening meal was delicious and the wine of good quality - no plonky-type house wine here! We were particularly impressed by the fact that the sources of all meat and fish were advertised on a board in the main bar so we know where what we were eating came from and that it lived and was slaughtered humanely. There was a very nice selection of local cheeses on offer which we went for as dessert.

The current owners have been here a year and it's a tribute to their hard work that they have rescued it from what was apparently a rather run-down establishment into the real country inn that it is now. It's really worth making the drive down the narrow country lanes!

HI Diane.

Thank you for your lovely review.

It's great to hear you enjoyed your stay and the characteristics of the property made up for the size!

We work hard with our chef to ensure we use high quality ingredients, locally sourced wherever possible so we're glad you enjoyed your meals.

Hopefully you'll brave those lanes again to visit if you're ever in the area again!!

Many thanks again.

Stayed overnight during relocation move. Glad only 1 night. Our room really was so small and the ensuite little more than a cupboard I had real problems being able to switch off the shower, it got very hot and I was in danger of burning to death, had to shout husband to help me.
The room was so small and I don't think the bed was a double, it felt claustrophobic. I am size 8 and my husband although 6 ft,slim, the bed was just too small to sleep properly. So had very little sleep and very tired next day. Just all together too small a space for two people.
The meal at night was really good and the breakfast also excellent. The landlord and landlady are very nice, but the whole place needs attention, in truth I felt very stressed staying there, but I was tired to start with due to house move. I would not stay there again, but it was very clean, just too small. A good place though for a nice meal. I do feel mean being critical about the room, but just didn't work for me. Sorry. Also not there fault as I am now living in a no phone signal area, but no reception and even with their wi fi my ipad or phone would not work.

Room Tip: There isn't one for two people, unless other rooms were bigger than ours which I doubt.

Thank you for taking the time to post your comments and while it is great to hear you enjoyed your meals with us, I'm sorry you were disappointed with your room.

My husband and I bought and renovated the White Horse Inn last summer and made the decision to add en-suites to create 3 letting rooms. Obviously we knew they would only be small and that we would subsequently lose a bit of room space but were confident the work was done to a high standard and with most of our customers only wanting a base for a few nights, we felt this was more than acceptable which appears to have been affirmed by the comments and reviews we have received from most guests following their stays. The bed in your room is indeed a standard 4ft 6" double but the other 2 rooms actually have slightly more space and the twin en-suite shower is slightly larger. Photos of all of our rooms are shown on our website so we hope most people can see for themselves before making a booking.

Regarding the shower, we were obviously concerned as they were all newly installed last year and this has never previously been raised as an issue. Having checked each of them, the temperatures appear to be fine and are adjusting as they should. What we have decided to do however is to add instructions on the use of the showers into each room's welcome file to avoid any future incidents.

Mobile phone signal is indeed challenging here as in many more rural areas (although I think not being contactable is seen as a positive to many of our regulars!!!). We are happy to advise people of locations at the property where signal is usually better if it is required. WiFi however should have been operating fine as we pay to have a much faster speed available to us and our customers through a separate provider so I am unsure why this would have been a problem.

On a positive, it's great to hear you enjoyed your meals with us so hopefully you have settled into your new home by now and we will perhaps see you for a meal at some point in the future now you are in the area.

Kind regards
Vikki

So glad we found this delightful pub, on route to a canal boat holiday with our border collies pup. Genuine, friendly welcome. Lovely little touches, e.g.homemade biscuits in a jar. Views from bedroom window enchanting.
Food excellent, varied menu, breakfast fab!

It is years since I ate at this pub, had a bad experience, vowed never to return. However when a friend from Cumbria was visiting this week decided to give it a try after reading positive reviews on Tripadvisor. Initial impressions were good, the place has been refurbed in tasteful style, the ?owner was welcoming, good guest Shropshire beers and toilets nice and clean. It was a Tuesday night and not busy, but did fill up during evening. The menu is unpretentious pub food. We had steaks (locally sourced), and cooked rare as requested, OH had gammon which he said was delicious. Puds, rhubarb creme brûlée and home made ices also good. (How many pubs make their own ice cream?) Pleasant evening thankfully as we were entertaining chum who has lots of brilliant pubs in her neck of the woods. Would definitely go again, these owners deserve to make a go of it. Give it a try.

Thank you for taking the time to post your kind comments and more importantly, thank you for coming back to The White Horse after your bad experience with the previous tenants! It is a shame that in such a short space of time, a reputation that has taken years to build up can quickly be destroyed and since my husband and I bought the Inn last year from the pubco, we have had numerous people say the same and so it is great when people do return and we get a chance to show what we are now doing.

We have worked hard with our chef to ensure our menu offers a good selection of dishes from 'traditional' pub to more complex, 'restaurant' ones. Wherever we can source locally, we do and the same with making things ourselves (such as those ice-creams!) so it's lovely to hear you enjoyed them and that your friends were also not disappointed.

As this review has unfortunately gone onto the B&B site for the Inn rather than the restaurant, if you get a couple of minutes to move it to the restaurant page, that would be great! The link to do this is as follows http://www.tripadvisor.com/UserReviewSupport then select White Horse Inn, Shrewsbury and just check address is Pulverbatch as there are a few White Horses in the county!

Many thanks again and we hope to welcome you back in the future.

I had the pleasure of stopping in the White Horse Inn this week, lovely warm couple hosting Steve and Vikki, very welcoming and great choice of food and beers.
Lots of local produce used in their kitchen.
Looks a great place to stay for cycling and walking. Would stay again perhaps for a long weekend..

Phoned Steve(landlord) on Friday for a same day room which was available. Arrived late but was made to feel very welcome. The Inn is very olde worlde, with lots of character. The atmosphere is very relaxed. The menu is superb with everything locally sourced. The lamb loin was melt in the mouth. The local beers were lovely. The veggie options are delicious with four different mains. The puddings are pretty damn good too! Our dogs were made to feel very welcome with a little bowl of treats for them on our arrival. All in all, a fantastic nights stay. We would definitely stay here again. Breakfast was good as well.
