My wife and I took a trip around the world for our honeymoon and spent about 10 days in Bali (divided between Nusa Dua, Ubud, and Semenyak). Did plenty of research before going, and finally decided on 3 nights at Maya Ubud. Very difficult decision since there appears to be so many great hotels in Ubud, but ultimately, would not have changed a thing.
This was my second time in Bali, but first in Ubud. Definitely a diferent and welcome scene from the typical beach setting in most Bali destinations. We found the grounds of the resort absolutely amazing. Definitely not an ideal setting for children, as it is very quit, very relaxing, and incredibly romantic!!
Of the three days there, we spent one day exporing Ubud (private trip to Bali's interior rice fields HIGHLY recommended), one day at the main pool, and the other full day at the spa pool. Will try and break it down as we remembered it
Pools: Main pool was very beautiful and the most popular destination for guests. Infinity pools overlooking a cliff, about 5 stories down is a small river which runs along the hotel. We are not early birds, and so by the time we would arrive to the pool, most of the prime seating was taken. If you plan on spending your time at the main pool, would recommend an early start. Fortunately it seemed like some people will have gotten there so early that good seats usually became available throughout the day.
Our favorite however was the spa pool!!. Usually relatively empty, also an infinity pool, overlooks the river. VERY peaceful and serene, also very beautiful. Most of the chairs by mid day were covered in shade (at least in July when we were there), so for sun worshipers, the best seat in the house is the patio seat just in front of the spa. Pool scene ultimately may have been my favorite part of the hotel.
Food: spent the first night enjoying a dinner/show at the hotel. Food was very good, but we found excellent restaurants just a short distance from the hotel in the town, so had the majority of our meals in town. Prices in town much more reasonable than most hotels, and many specials available. Breakfast at the hotel was very good, but nothing distinguished it from most other quality hotels.
Room: stayed in a villa on the side of the rice paddies, but ours was more overlooking the tennis court. Not the best view, but the great thing was the proximity to the lobby, so it was very easy to get to the main pool and the lobby at any time. Room itself was very nice, somewhat unique with rocks on the floor, silver bathtub, and interesting lighting. Arrived to a bath tub full of rose pedals and anymoon treats which was very nice. Really enjoyed the room, although we did not spend too much time there
Service: excellent. What you would expect from a 5 star hotel.
We did not get to try the spa as our time was limited (and our trip long and costly), so cannot comment on this
Wanted to say a comment about the hotel grounds. This is a very special place which truly compliments the beauty found in Ubud. This was near the end of our (almost 2 month trip), and during this trip we were fortunate to indulge in many fine hotels (Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, Oriental Dhara Dhevi Chiang Mai, Nusa Dua Beach Hotel, Burj-al-Arab Dubai, Hyatt Sharm-el-sheik, etc.) The Maya Ubud hold a special place in our hearts. Feels like you are in a garden paradise, surrounded by nature. Also felt very private. Took long walks along the trails and river beds with incredible scenery. We are definitely returning to this place.
Last thing, we found it interesting that the hotel had many French tourists, especially when compared to other places in Bali. Realized that the French must have found something in this place that is special, probably the private, romantic feel of the resort. In all, when in Bali, spend some time in Ubud. When in Ubud, spend some time at Maya Ubud. You will love it!!!
