“The salsa is so-so, but you can't beat the service and the food for this city!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 23, 2012

On a recent trip to Mammoth Cave, I checked this site to see what restaurants passed the test. This was the only one in Cave City to get good reviews, so we gave it a try and we were not disappointed.

Along with other reviewers, the house salsa is not that great. It is obviously made from canned tomatoes, and while they seasoned it well, it still is a little strange to eat. I tried the medium roasted salsa and honestly it reminded me more of a Chinese sauce of some sort with chopped up green onion in it.

Don't judge this only by the salsa. The food (steak fajitas) was good and lots of it. The pico de gallo is wonderful and I could have eaten that alone and been fine. The wait staff was fast and efficient, the restaurant was clean and smoking and non-smoking sections were apart enough so that we didn't smell anything.

I would definitely eat there again if I were in the area. I can't say the same for any other restaurant in Cave City.

“Best of the boring”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 8, 2012

Menu is promisingly extensive, even exotic, but ultimately food was bland and boring. Chips were excellent, but the salsa was simply crushed tomatoes out of a can - not salsa at all. El Matzalan appears to be a local chain (there's one right outside the Comfort Inn in both Cave City and Glasgow) that with a little incentive (like competition) could really shine. Avoid in Glasgow where there are other really good options (Taste of Texas, yum!) but in Cave City you've little choice other than chain burgers.

I can't speak for all El Mazatlan locations but in Cave City, the smell of smoke was present even at my table, deliberately selected as the one farthest from the smoking section. Perhaps I have just gotten too used to non-smoking restaurants, though.

Good beer selection, and service was fine.

“Very good "mexican" food in the middle of no where.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2012

Went to Glasgow on business for a few days with some cohorts. This was recommended by many peopole so we went and were not disappointed.

First, giant margaritas!! Very good giant margaritas! This in a "moist" county so we were happy.

Make sure to order the "roasted" salsa -- ignore the plain bland stuff they give you and demand the roasted stuff, it's excellent!

All the food we tried was very good. There have some speciality dishes that come in a hot stone -- I had the pork version -- awesome!!

The only disappoint was the chile renello -- meh.
