“Gillhams- beautiful setting, great food, good hosts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2012

i visited the resort recently for an afternoon w/friends who live nearby, and i must say that
it is in an absolutely stunning location, lush native tropical greenery everywhere,
surrounded by the bizarre limestone "karsts" for which Krabi & Phrang Nga province are
famous for...
the owner, son & daughter each came to talk with us; we also talked w/several guests,
who all agreed as to certain specifics:
1) for a fisherman, this is paradise...
2) the setting is idyllic
3) the pool is great
4) the restaurant's food is delicious
5) the hosts & staff are gregarious, knowledgeable & ever-helpful
6) the room interiors are a bit "faded" -i looked at several- ***
(but the setting, again, is beautiful, so a trade-off???)
7) even w/other families around, not really a lot for the youngsters to "do" ***
8) a bit far away from anywhere else in Krabi & Ao Nang ***

*** (these points are why i gave it "very good" & not "excellent")

i'd say, stay a night or 2 (or just go for a day of fishing), then proceed to
Ao Nang, Railay, Krabi town, Koh Lanta, Phrang Nga Bay, etc...
in short, this resort is definitely worth checking out, even if only for the day...

Room Tip: all rooms are ok (not great); don't expect luxury (however, rather pricey!!!); but very quaint...

We have just spent the most enjoyable and memorable week at Gillhams.

My husband and 13 year old son are both keen fishermen, I am a keen reader and sunbather!!
All our needs were met here, plenty of loungers and a fantastic pool for me and the most amazing fishing ever for the boys.

The accomodation worked well for us, two bed rooms and shower and lovely verandah.

The surroundings are exceptional and are only beaten by the quality of the fish and the fishing. Having said that the professionalism, enthusiasm and skill of the team is what really stands out both on the fishing and non fishing sides. Whilst we worked mostly with Lee (who is an absolute star) we also had the pleasure of spending time with Joel, Chris and Steve who are all great lads and all of whom contributed in some way to our stay and success.
The food was fantastic, the best Thai food we had all of our trip.
What you have achieved is quite extraordinary and exceptional and cannot be faulted.
We can’t wait to come back and we are already looking forward to it, we just need to work out when we can return now!

Thanks again

We (2 adults and 2 young children) stayed in this resort for 2 nights in July 2012. My conclusion is: The fishing experience is superb, but you may not need to stay there (you can just go there for day fishing).

Pros: 1) The scenery is beautiful with limstone mountains, a lake and bungalows. Walking around is relaxing. At night, the sky is full of stars. 2) The resort accommodates few guests. It is excellent for those who look for tranquility. 3) The food is delicious. 4) As said, the fishing experience is superb. We are total beginners at fishing. The staff were very nice. They taught us the basics and were always around to help. We fished for 3 hours only, but we could do it longer and would definitely enjoy it if we had more time. My 7-year-old daughter was thrilled about the experience and talked about it often with her friends afterwards. If we travel again to Ao Nang, we would definitely come again for fishing.

Cons: 1) While the bungalows are beautifully set in the scenery, the interior is a bit not up to standard as a resort. The wooden furniture looked old and dirty. The floor mats looked old and dusty that I refrained from stepping on them. The water pressure for shower was very weak, and you would not enjoy taking a shower. 2) There were very few guests (just another couple) at the time of our stay. It is not ideal for young children if they want to see or interact with people at their age. 3) We are non-fishers, and it was our second time visiting Ao Nang. We chose this resort because it was said that the resort could be a base for exploring Krabi. Hoping to do something different this time, we did 3 hours of fishing and booked 2 half-day tours through the resort. What I found was that all tours could be found elsewhere in Ao Nang Beach or Krabi Town. In fact, we went to Ao Nang Beach afterwards. The point I wanted to make is that if you will travel to Ao Nang Beach or Krabi Town and book tours there, you can bargain for the price especially at low season. You can’t do the same through this resort due to its isolation from the main areas where many travel agencies implying keen competition can be found.

Lastly about the resort’s rate, the resort applies a flat rate throughout the year. Whether this resort’s rate is good for value depends on what you are going to do there. I must say that the fishing experience is surperb that you would think the resort’s rate is good for value. But if your main purpose is not fishing and you will travel to Ao Nang Beach or Krabi Town, you can have many good choices in those places with low season’s rate that is very good for value. Apart from the fishing experience, my family enjoyed staying in Ao Nang Beach more.

We stayed at Gillhams for 1 night as part of our Thailand Holiday. We are 2 young(ish couples) with avid fishermen.

We loved the 2 bedroom cottage and it worked perfectly for us. The only criticism I have about the accommodation is the bathrooms - the shower(I know this is relatively common in Thailand) was just on a hook on the wall with no partition which resulted in the whole bathroom and everything you had in it getting sopping every time we showered. This meant that all clothing had to be left in the room to change in, when travelling with friends, this was not ideal. I would have expected slightly better from this calibre of resort.

The fishing was obviously fantastic and the guides were great. Ours (Scott) specifically was fantastic. Adding humour and fun as well as knowledge to the experience. Pool was great for the girls to lie at during the day.

Stuff we didn't like:
- only 2 chairs on the balcony, even though there are 4 people in a room. Just seems strange.
- Atmosphere - we felt the bar area was lacking in atmosphere and camaraderie, I don't think the resort was specifically full so this could have been why. After receiving the monthly newsletters from the resort we thought the owners would be warm and around to chat to. But we never really saw them

These are not big issues, but thought I would highlight them. We would return if in the area again. The staff were great as was the food at the resort.

Just returned from a wonderful holiday in Thailand, the highlight was Gillhams. A special treat for my fishing mad husband Aaron. We arrived in rain early in the morning and Sean had a warm welcome for us. Our bungalow had the most outstanding views and fishing within 30 yards . Rods were set up quicker than I unpacked , and within minutes the first fish was caught , whistles blown and excitement started. On the first day he caught 10 fish, 4 species including an 300lb arapaima . Aaron refused to leave his rods for 9 hours , we brought him drinks and food, he was just having too much fun. I relaxed beside him , cooling in the pool and meeting another couple who were on there second visit. Sue said you'll be back and shes right . Beautiful place, well run with fish management and breeding a priority, all fish were checked and unhooked with care and respect. The guides we had were brilliant Joel and Steve just loved the look on Aaron' s face every time he caught one.
The resturant in the evening produced the best food we had in Thailand, maybe I should have learnt how to cook spring rolls , will do it next time.
If you are thinking of booking dont hesitate it will be the best thing you do , Congrats to Stuart and his team , see you next year .

Room Tip: all bungalows have the perfect view

This place is amazing!! This is a paradise for every angler!!
Me and my boyfriend stayed the for 3 nights last week and we can't complain. He caught 13 fishes in 3 days including 80-85 kg Arapaima. People who works there are so friendly and they are always there for you. I'm not fishing but you can use infinity pool and free wifi plus you can enjoy watching your man fishing many different huge fishes. We definitely coming back there next year. Thank you very much Gillhams fishing resort!!

Lovely resort which I am currently stopping and i can't fault the service of the guides or the good food in the restaurant ( first time I ever have seen Arapaima on menu and it is delicious) or the extremely helpful and efficient staff. The fishing has been excellent and I managed several species, my best fish being a 220 lb Arapaima together with Siamese Carp, Arawana, and the beautiful Amazon red Tail Catfish. The beautifully landscaped gardens and the delightful infinity swimming pool are well maintained also.

Room Tip: All rooms are good so it is not an issue
