“The Shining Shines”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 6, 2013

When I go to Burkesville, KY, I like to stay at the Alpine Lodge at the top of the summitt. The view overlooking Burkesville is like a small Christmas Village - anytime of the year. It makes me think of the Shining because the last 3 times I stayed, I was the only one up there. Now they have a little office cabin with staff to greet you.

The view is terrific, it's peaceful and calm and you get a nice balcony. They have new owners now and the management makes you feel right at home. The upgraded rooms are very charming combining new mixed with a rustic feel. I got a clean, large bathtub this time instead of a tiny shower.

The mattresses are the new cool foam gel and sleep great. Can't wait to see the summer changes and what's coming next.

Room Tip: Some rooms have jacuzzi tubs and or fireplaces.

Thank you for your nice comments. The Alpine is certainly a new place now. We have tried hard to make this the best place around for our guests and want everyone to enjoy being here as much as we do. You are right, the new office and 24 hour staff make this a totally different place now, and with such a great setting and with so many things to do, it is the right place to stay. We look forward to seeing you again real soon.

We stumbled upon this place during the Roller Coaster Yard sale. The manager was very nice and room was just renovated. Clean rooms with new everything. Loved the private balcony and the entire feeling of the place. Worth checking out if you are in the area. Will definitely stay here again when back in the neighborhood!!

We were here for a couple of days while closing on a nearby property. There are new owners who remodeled each unit. They are beautiful! New bathrooms, carpets, bed and fixtures! The beds are the most comfortable beds I have ever laid on. They were very clean rooms. The jacuzzi rooms are beautiful. The view is just breathtaking! The family that is running the hotel is just wonderful! We would certainly visit again!! The value is unbeatable for the quality of the rooms! We had stayed at a Best Western, and these rooms are much better!

The restaurant is under renovation and is not open just yet.

Room Tip: If traveling as a group, they have an entire large house to rent. It is gorgeous! Cathedral ceilings...

My wife and I were there to see family, so getting a hotel was a must. Our room was pretty big and had a hot tub in it. We also had a balcony where you could look out over the entire town, since this is the only building on top of a mountain and the town is in a valley.

The furnishings were clean and the heater worked well. Also, the shower had that great water pressure that most hotels today just do not have anymore, so we appreciated being able to take a nice long and hot shower after using the jacuzzi. The best part was the price. We are from Boston, where a nothing hotel costs over $250 a night plus parking. This room was less than half of that and parking was free. Everything in this town costs less than back East, especially restaurants.

It was a fun stay. Good value for the money, so we'll be staying here again next time we're in town to see family.

Our carpet was filthy. The backdoor to the balcony was painted shut. We had to pound it to get it open and the door handle was about to come off. The front door security lock did not work so we set our cooler in front of the door for security. The bathroom floor was filthy. The towel rod was missing. No toilet paper. We had to go to the town below to get toilet paper. The sink was rusty. The ceiling paint was hanging down in pieces in the bathroom. The shower water was so rusty it even stained the towels. The furniture on the balcony was so dirty we had to clean it to set in the chairs. The air conditioner did work and it got so cold we look for a blanket as the bed had one sheet and a thin bedspread only. I found a blanket in one of the drawers but it was so old it was stiff as a board. The closet had been board over so there was no where to hang anything. They charged us a $100 for the night. We tried the next day to talk to the manager but the girl said he was gone for the weekend. So after returning home we trying to get a hold of him for three days but he was never in and would not return our calls. There was no management up on the hill and no one in the motel but us. Never again.
