The reception was a little bit more receptive!
We were driving to the Chicago area from St. Pete Beach, Fl and needed to stop for the night. We mulled over coupons found in a travel coupon book found in a rest stop (most rest stops have these hotel travel coupon books) on Saturday, April 20. I used my phone to check out all the reviews, where the hotels were centrally located to I-65 and then poured over reviews found on Tripadvisor. Finally, we decided to stop at Baymont being that the name has always been a good brand name, the location to exit 121 and of course the price!
The reviews were mixed, but the newer ones were just mediocre at best. We decided to take the chance anyway.
The receptionist in the very welcoming lobby (the hotel took pictures and the lobby is identical to the pictures) was not too happy to see the coupon book in my hand. I asked her if she had rooms available and if she would take the coupon. She said she only had two rooms left, both on the second floor and both were smoking. I doubted that was the truth because the parking lot was only half full and it was past 10PM when we arrived. There were no other people in the lobby, the hallways or the pool area. All indications the hotel was not full and that she wanted to get rid of rooms that were less desirable.
She did her job, the room had a lot of things going for it! It was clean, large, the TV was a flat screen with many channels. The king bed was comfy enough with 4 pillows (small, but adequate). There was a nice fridge and microwave on its own stand. There was an area to hang up clothes. A luggage rack. A coffee pot and blow dryer. The sink was outside the bathroom with granite or a granite look counter. The shower had a bowed shower curtain rod offering more room to shower. Good hot water and pressure. The love seat should be changed out because it was stained and uncomfortable, but my husband enjoys to relax before going to sleep, so it did its job. The furniture was dated, but wasn't as bad as some of the reviews claimed it to be. The heater/AC was adjustable and wasn't loud. But when first turned the heat on (it was cold that night), the filter didn't do its job and it blew out cigarette smoke smell.
Now, here is why the receptionist gave us this room for the coupon price of $42. The room absolutely stank worse than any hotel room I was ever in! The hallway smell almost gagged me, it was that BAD! I had a can of febreeze in my bag and sprayed and sprayed. Went out to taco bell (not the best neighborhood, be careful!) and came back and some of the smell dissipated. Some of the wallpaper was peeling off the the walls and the carpets needed a really good shampooing!!
I blame the receptionist for how bad the room smelled. I knew we couldn't complain because I'm sure the only other "available" room would have been the same. She knew she would have trouble giving out that room to any other non smoking customer that paid full price, so she gave that to us. If they didn't want to be in the coupon book, they shouldn't be. If they do, then treat all customers a like. I felt (by this receptionist) that I was at her mercy. She really should look for a new job.
With all this said, our sleep was good (a little bit frebreezy, but adequate). The breakfast was very good with very nice ladies running the large, bright room. Not enough protein, but the pastries and donuts were great! Several different choices of bagels with cold butter and/orcream cheese to choose from. Frozen waffles. Different teas and decent coffee. Hot chocolate mix and orange & cranberry juice. The only protein were hard boiled eggs.
When we left, we notice how pretty the lobby really was. The indoor pool was very nice with a handicapped chair to help the handicapped get into the pool. The spa looked great from what we could see. We didn't go outside the pool area, but it looked like there were places to sit to enjoy the outside.
If it weren't for the smelly room, I would give it 5+ stars. Four stars is fine, I won't fault the hotel (since they need some smoking rooms for their smoking guests), but coupon or not, please allow every guest to pick their choice of room.
Would I recommend this hotel, absolutely I would, but I would tell them to beware of the smoking rooms!
