“Good for the area....I guess”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2006

Bardstown is not a pretty town. Kurtz is in one of the prettier buildings, but it's old and needs to be redecorated, especially the lighting. Staff is very friendly and helpful. Food is mediocre. Fried chicken is decent, sides are very weak. Salad was dull. Vegetables are canned.

Let me begin by saying I eat at Kurtz often. I live way too close to it. I eat there for lunch and dinner - dine in and carry out. I do it all and everytime it's perfect and wonderful.

A few "musts":
at lunch time - the cream of broccoli soup is amazing. NOT made with a meat stock, it is completely vegetarian and completely amazing.
anytime - corn cakes. With any meal you'll receive a few corn cakes. Ask for more as soon as you can because you'll gobble them up!
dinner time - the fried chicken. It is skillet fried and amazing. Also at dinner a must is the mashed potatoes. Not even your mother made mashed potatoes like this - no lumps, no skins, no added butter - just incredible creamy mashed potatoes.
dessert - what to have?! They're known for their pies and bread pudding with bourbon sauce. Both are worthy of praise - both are wonderful.

I could go on much longer about Kurtz - i could give you the history of it and how it's run by a family in town and it's the third generation running it and some of the fourth generation works as servers but that's all just icing on the cake. Go there for the food and you'll be charmed by the atmosphere.
