“Beautiful...and without surprise”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013

This hotel is in a quiet position in Yogyakarta, far from traffic jam and smog.
It's a very nice place, well organized, with kind and very competent staff.
Staff is avalaible at every time, speaks very good English and could organize no expensive tour in the neighbourhood.
As regards the hotel: there is a very beautiful pool, a good and not expensive restaurant and also the basic standard rooms are very nice and clean.
Wifi is free and works well.
Perhaps among the hotels I visited in Indonesia this is the only one with no surprise, beautiful and clean as You can see on the website.

We stayed 4 nights at the Rumah Mertua / Yogyakarta. We arrived very late but nevertheless the staff was handelling our Check-In very fast and professional. We even got a welcome drink and some snacks upon entering our standard room with a nice king-size indonesian-style-bamboo bed. The room itself was clean, it had a safe, a fridge, a dirty clothes basket and a wardrobe. The bathroom was also clean with a very small washbasin and a nice, warm shower. The hotel offers free WiFi, you can book your Tours here and they always have a smile for you. The pool in the garden area is small, but very clean and we always found a free deck chair. You can choose your breakfast from a menu and they offer very good indonesian food all day long. The only negative thing were the towels: After using them once they spreaded a nose-unfriendly smell. The hotel is about a 20-minute drive from the city center in a very quiet area. I recommend this one to all of you, who don't want to reach everything within a footwalk but who can enjoy a quiet, lovely place with great service and friendly people.

We loved this hotel! The beautiful garden with swimming pool gives the hotel an exotic ambiance. The staff was really kind and gave excellent service. We did the cycling tour from the Borobudur, which gave us a good view on Java and its rice fields. Thereby it was just good fun! We also loved the suggestion of a massage after our 18 hour flight. Great hotel and I would live to return there sometime!

Lovely quiet clean hotel. Staff were extremely friendly and always smiling.

The main tourist area of Yogya is approx 25 mins by taxi, traffic is usually heavy and taxi costs around 5euro (metered). But it is worth walking around the area the hotel is in down small local roads and villages for a different Yogya feel!

Food in this hotel was very tasty and portions were big!

We did the Borobudur cycling trip which was fantastic- we left hotel at 5 am, spent ~ 2 hours looking at the spectacular Buddhist temples then doing 50 km cycle on good mountain bikes through local villages and paddy fields. Great scenery and the cycle isn't too demanding, is suitable for the not so fit. We stopped in a local warung for some food- we had beef stew with rice but the meat was mostly bone, cartilage and teeth which we couldn't stomach! but apart from that it was a fantastic trip - you stay off the hectic main roads and you get right back to the guest house on mostly quiet roads (no helmets tho).

Room Tip: if you are staying in a room near the kitchen/ reception bring earplugs as morning activity starts q...

Stayed for three nights at Rumah Mertua.
The property is set about 20 minutes from the main bits in town in a resonably quiet suburb.

Pros.
Staff were all really lovely and helpful. Very responsive.
The garden is a pleasant place to hang out after all the noise of the city.
The pool is nice and deep and kept very clean.
Breakfast was my favorite meal of the day as each time they brought out some tasty indonesian breakfast snacks and fresh fruit to start. The pineapple pancake is delicous! Other food was also tasty if a little overpriced.
Internet worked most of the time...but only in areas towards the front of the hotel.

Cons.
Stayed in a standard room..it's pretty basic with no safe...and not even some hand soap...
Shower did not have very good pressure.
The hotel is just too far out from the main attractions in the centre of town. It says about 20 minutes in a taxi but it often took longer and if you plan on making several trips in and out during the day it just takes up so much time getting there and back. appox 35000 rupiah one way.

Went on the hotel's cycling tour to Borobdur. The trip involves getting the hotel car out to the temple leaving at 5am from the hotel. You then have two hours to look around the temple. This is a pleasant time of the day to do it and it wasn't so crowded. You then hop on your bikes and do the 45km trip back. The guide said to ring bell if we wanted to stop for photos but the scenery isn't that special. Best if you just feel like stretching legs...check bikes carefully for faults before leaving. My pedal squeaked the whole way. Stopped for lunch in a small town. I was expecting a lovely lunch like another bicycle tour I had taken in Bali. The place we stopped at was not impressive. We got a small serve of beef liver and rice each (mostly cold) and some cold deep fried indonesian snacks. The drinks on offer were a very small choice. Not even soft drink was available at the time.
I recommend another bicycle tour I did with a group in town called ViaVia. This tour is a much slower tour and you stop at a number of really interesting local places and get to try doing different things like brick making, rice planting etc.
Tried two different massages at the hotel. Not sure if it's because Javanese massage is not my favorite style but I found both far too light for my taste even when I requested a harder style massage. Massage for one hour is 192500 rupiah including tax.
You can get similar quality massage in town for half that price and including the nice finishing touches like ginger tea.

Room Tip: Not the rooms next to the dining area. People start eating breakfast early.

We were 5 girls traveling through Indonesia and we stayed here for 2 nights after our long haul flight from London. It was the perfect hotel to unwind and relax until we got our energy back to explore Java. The hotel is beautiful with the right balance of traditional and modern, the rooms were the right size, their food was surprinsingly good (try the Nisa Goreng with pineapple) and their swimming pool was a dream. But definitely the highlight was the staff, they were incredibly helpful, sorting out day trips to Borobudur and Prambanan - and with a wonderful smile...

We got the cheapest room and was smelly, no chair or nightstand could fit in, was really small, urine smell and was not worth it. Other rooms looked better but with glass wall facing inner yard so it gets too loud and bright at night. Far from centre and 20 min taxi is a hot and dusty ride. Staff was very nice but could notable up for the room .......
