“Great old-style diner”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 18, 2013 via mobile

A great atmosphere for brunch. We were here at 11 am on a Monday and it was very busy! Obviously a local favorite. Classic Midwestern breakfast fare on a huge menu. Food arrived quickly, friendly service, tasty food. We like local hole-in-the-wall joints with unique flavor and this definitely fit the bil!

“Step back in time.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

I bought an e-mail coupon so thought we should try it out. What a neat little place, and it is quite little. It is reminiscent of the old 50's diner, in fact, that's what it is. There are still juke boxed in the booths, menus on the chalk boards, and waitresses who are friendly, energetic, and attentive. The menu has lots of varied choices, food is average to good, but the experience is fun. Don't look for anything fancy, we weren't fancy back in the 50's.

“Nope”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2012

The only reason I ate here was because I got points from Best Buy's incentive program. Boy was I disappointed. Be wary when you walk into a "restaurant" at high noon and are almost alone. Food was less then average and the service needed help. You would think since I was alone I would have been seen more.

“Great change of pace - old-fashioned cafe, near great park”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

This cute little place is something really out-of-the ordinary in eating out. It looks like nothing much on the outside, but inside you step back into an eatery from the early 1900s, judging by the ambiance, furniture, decor and abundance of intriguing historic Wichita photos on the wall. Food is decent diner/cafe food, modestly priced, served by nice-enough folks, quickly and courteously.

Very peaceful and laid-back environment. Fits with the whole Riverside Park ambiance.

In fact, to get the full benefit of a morning or mid-day meal here, top it off with a drive down the adjacent north-south street, over a bridge into the tree-lined Riverside neighborhood, nestled between the two lazy winding Arkansas rivers (Big Ark. and Little Ark.), as they slowly merge into one river.

An amazing amount of riverbanks, especially about half-mile south of the first bridge (over the Little Ark., just behind the restaurant), down around the Big Ark. where the main park is. Bring a few bread scraps to toss at the greedy geese while resting on the banks of the river, and a blanket to sit on, and enjoy the peaceful experience under a shady tree, watching the river stroll by, as waterfowl fly over -- downtown glowing above the far horizon to the east, and a beautiful sunset glowing to the west.

Top off the afternoon or evening by dropping into the "Riverside Perk" an eclectic little coffee shop for the local art crowd (much like the "Central Perk" coffee shop in the TV series "Friends"), just a few blocks south of the Riverside Cafe, in the heart of the Riverside neighborhood (at 11th and Bitting, I think). Casual, sloppy-chic, comfortable, with outdoor and indoor seating, and even internet wi-fi. Many evenings, particularly weekends, the "Perk" has some folk or jazz musician, or maybe even rock or light country. And don't overlook the always-different artwork on the walls of this "gallery" -- its all for sale, and some of its pretty great stuff, sold cheaply by the neighborhood "starving artists."

But start the experience with the Riverside Cafe -- it's a great little eatery, popular for a good reason, in spite of (or because of?) being in an awkward out-of-the way spot, on 13th Street, a few blocks west of Waco Street (and all the other downtown north/south streets), just over the river bridge west of North High School. First stoplight west of the North High bridge, on southeast corner of Bitting(?) & 13th.

A great way to put some serenity back in your life.

“Riverside Cafe East”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 27, 2012

We had a lovely breakfast at the location on Woodlawn. Great food (incredible ham steaks and pancakes) and super friendly waitstaff. You'd never know how good this place is from the looks of it outside. It was recommended by locals, and they weren't wrong!
