“Home away from home!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2013

We stayed at this beautiful resort for an entire week. We could have stayed longer. We had just come from Paris, and the peacefulness of Ricavo was just what we were looking for. Our room was beautiful, clean, and large enough to accomodate our family of four comfortably. Christina (the owner) and Daniela were so helpful with planning our day trips to Florence, the beach, and many hilltop towns. Our family also took a cooking class, with a local chef, which Daniela set up for us. The evening was unforgettable. The food at the restaurant was delicious and fresh!!! We would definitely revisit this little gem again.

Room Tip: We stayed in the family suite which had a separate bedroom and two beds placed in the living room...

This was our second stay at Tenuta di Ricavo and we again had a wonderful time. As some other reviewers have noted, the hotel is rustic and pretty rather than ultra-modern and overly manicured (gravel track off the main road, traditional furniture in the rooms, limited wi-fi coverage) but this should not be considered a negative - it is all part of Tenuta's timeless charm. Our superior room was very comfortable, with a terrace overlooking the hills. The grounds and pool area are well tended with fig trees, plum trees, lavender and butterflies in abundance. The hotel is in a great location - locally Castellina has lots of eating options and little shops, and day trips to Siena and Florence are very feasible. We ate at the hotel on three nights out of our four night stay, going for the half board option which was very tasty every night and seemed like a bit of a bargain really. The staff are welcoming, friendly and helpful. All in all, a great place!

We had a wonderful stay at Tenuta di Ricavo in 1996. We have since recommended it to friends who have always reported a very good experience there. Finally, this year we were able to return ourselves. This time, we brought our 13-year old granddaughter. Christina is still there. She and her caring staff still make the experience a truly pleasant one. She helped with advice, from where to park in Florence to good nearby restaurants that we might try, though we were very pleased with the hotel restaurant, as well. Fabiana, who waits tables, tends bar and generally does whatever else has to be done, is a real gem. She has tons of energy and a great sense of humor.
Tenuta di Ricavo gives you the experience of living in a quiet, Medieval village surrounded by unspoiled and beautiful Tuscan countryside. As in our earlier trip, we used Ricavo as a base to spend several days visiting many of the amazing cities and villages in Tuscany. It is a good location from which to visit almost all of Tuscany and much of Umbria, as well, by taking daily car trips. It is also a great place read, swim and relax.
We will continue to recommend Tenuta di Ricavo to everyone we know who is going to Tuscany.

Room Tip: We stayed both times in a room with a patio overlooking the countryside and would recommend that.

Wonderful location, beautiful nature, most welcoming tenants, perfect layout of the handful of houses - and very nicely decorated rooms: a place to go back to! Beautiful and nicely kept swimming pools. For us it was the third time - in 20 years: clearly not enough! We will now keep our intervals shorter...Important also and very noticeable: the place is Family-owned and Family-managed.

Room Tip: we mostly stayed in one of the smaller houses - excellent.

Tenuta di Ricavo is a handsome, comfortable hotel with beautiful views and grounds near Castellina in Chianti. Its location is excellent not only for visiting Chianti but also for convenient day trips to Siena, Florence, and The Mall for high-end discount shopping. The hotel's guest rooms and public rooms are large, well-appointed, and very attractive. Its restaurant La Pecora Nera has a terrific young chef and offers fine traditional Tuscan dishes with a modern touch. Service in the dining room and on the patio is outstanding. Christina, the owner, and her staff are lovely people and do everything possible to make a guest's stay at Ricavo wonderful. In May 2013, my wife and I stayed at Tenuta di Ricavo for the 12th time in 15 years, and we plan to return again next year.

A wonderful place to stay when you want to take a rest after visiting Florence or Siena, The hotel is a well kept medieval village situated in the middle of Tuscan hills. The owner Christina and her staff are very friendly, You hear thousands of birds singing and the sky is full of stars. The smaller hot spots in Chianti are very nearby and there are lots of nice restaurants in the environment. The hotel itself has a restaurant if you do not want to dinner elsewhere. The municipal sand road of about 1 km towards the hotel is the only negative point. For the rest we enjoyed every minute of our stay in this paradise.

What a gem!!

Not far from Catellina town center. Back in the woods/country side. It was a little 'compound'. Gravel road. Many stone buildings. They upgraded us to a 2 bdr. which made it easier for us to just put our suitcases on the bed and leave them open rather than having to unpack everything. had a little living room with tv (which we didn't use). But I did use the living area to read in the morning which husband slept.

Reception was friendly and helpful! (Our adapter stopped working and they were nice enough to find a charger in the office and charged it for us overnight!!)
Great continental breakfast. Nice dinners.

Did not have internet service in room, but they did have a room in the main area where they served breakfast and dinner. Also a large room with a large fireplace was nice to sit at after dinner with a coffee or cocktail. Other small rooms to sit and play games or read a book. Had a nice little library of books - some on Italy and some just to read. I think only 23 rooms there. They ahd a beautiful pool area that we did not use because of the time of year. Still too cool.

If you stay there, make sure you go to down the road a bit to Casa Emma's vineyard for dinner. They had a preset menu (3 or 4 course) with wine tasting. Definitely worth the $$. Beautiful vineyards. Fabio gave us a tour of the wine cellar after too.
