Travelling across Kansas on our way west, my wife and I needed a stop for lunch. Sick of the chains on the exit ramps, we ventured a few minutes into downtown Salina and were rewarded with a very good Italian restaurant. We were seated promptly in one of the ample and pleasant dining rooms by an enthusiastic waitress who was downright excited when she found out it was our first time in Salina and at Martinellii's. The menu had your typical family restaurant red sauce fare but several other dishes as well. I choose the four cheese manicotti, which arrived in a generous portion of three pasta tubes. It was delicious with all four cheese flavors coming through a hearty red sauce. My wife choose the Martinelli's special pasta: small shells in a light white sauce with mushrooms and interestingly spiced chunks of chicken. The salad before the meal was fresh with a tasty house Italian and the bread good as well. All dishes on the menu were priced reasonably. I grew up in NJ, so I am familiar with family red-sauce eats. Martinelli's reminded me of the good ones--honest food, honest prices, friendly staff, and no pretensions.
