“Nice Suite on the 7th Floor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

We stayed overnight as it was very close to the venue for my husband's company Christmas party. We normally stay at high end chains but the reviews were good, so I took a chance. There was some confusion regarding where to check in-there is a "sister" site right next to the hotel and a large parking garage beside it. We found a spot right next to the entrance and the lobby was very nice. Apparently there is an evening appetizer and happy hour event that several people took advantage of-we were in a hurry to get changed and get to the party. Our suite was large, had nicer furnishings than the more expensive hotels we stay in. They had shampoo, conditioner and body wash filled dispensers in the shower. That was wonderful considering I forgot to pack the body wash! There was a nice, hot breakfast and very pleasant staff. We would definitely stay here again.

We stayed here on a road trip, just passing through. Arrived around 4:30 on a Friday ... what a lot of rush-hour traffic! Steel yourself. But the Drury was a calm place. We requested a quiet upper floor room and the desk clerk gave us just that. Everything was clean and comfortable. We were concerned when we discovered that the fitness room was closed for remodeling ... but thrilled with the hotel's solution: a free pass to the EXCELLENT health club next door with classes, lots of cardio machines, weight machines and free weights, even a pool and indoor tennis. Thanks for the good plan, Drury Inn.

Typical Drury Inn which means nice evening reception and breakfast. Public areas and guest rooms were nicely decorated and clean. We had a king room near the front end of the building and the room was quite compact. It was adequate for 2 people but certainly not spacious. I prefer to have small bottles of lotion, shampoo, etc., in the bathroom. But this Drury had dispensers mounted in the shower. Difficult to anticipate the quality of the product when the brand of the shampoo is not on the product. The hotel is near a highway and easy to reach. However, the parking lot was showing some wear and the other businesses in the immediate area were a bit run down also. The people at the front desk and the food service staff were very pleasant.

Room Tip: May want to inquire if a large king room is available as some are quite small.

We stayed here for several reasons including good past experienes with Drury, being a pet friendly hotel and being in a safe location. It was also 20 minutes from KU Medical Center, the reason for the trip. When we got our room on the 5th floor, we soon found the toilet was backing up and called maintenance to fix the issue. The second time it happened, the Manager and another woman came up and apologized for the problem and the inconvienance. They asked us if we would mind changing rooms and they would be glad to move our clothes and other items down the hall. Long story short, we were upgraded to a 2 room suite Suite that was very comfortable and made the trip a more pleasurable experience. We applaud the staff and their willingness to make it right for the issues we had. The way they handled the issue is the reason I am giving them an excellent rating in spite of the toilet back up. (It happens). The hotel is very clean, the meals were fresh, hot and the service was outstanding. There are nearby restaurants, shopping and upscale venues close by. We will return to this hotel next time we are in KC. Thank you Drury!

Room Tip: We stayed in 501. Although it was by the freeway, we heard very little noise. We always try for a up...

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

Our four-day stay was to spend Thanksgiving with family.

First, the pluses. The 4th-floor suite was laid out nicely and equipped as would be expected for the price range with a microwave and mini-fridge. The suite was quiet, despite the presence in the hotel of multiple basketball teams. The amenities were on the low side, with only shower products available (on-wall dispensers - unfortunately, all scented.) The breakfast buffet was adequate, if a bit mundane. We did not partake of the evening "happy hour". The front desk personnel were pleasant and competent. It's convenient having direct entrance to certain floors of the hotel from the parking garage.

The minuses?

First, a "personal" minus that might not bother others: the morning buffet never changes. If you like sausage as your breakfast meat, along with oatmeal, scrambled eggs, potato cubes and biscuits with plain white gravy, you're all set - that'll be it, every day.

In the morning, the staff tries valiantly to keep up, but since there appears to be only one person working during the weekdays, keeping up with food is, of course, the priority. Therefore, the milk runs out (both for drinking and for coffee), the orange juice concentrate runs out, and the fruit runs out. This is not a staff problem, this is a MANAGEMENT problem (and I DON'T mean the front desk!) by not having two people always working during the last hour of breakfast service, every day.

Management suggestion: Breakfast service should run until 10 AM every day, not just on weekends. And get your large milk dispenser fixed - right now!

My final "minus" comments are also directed at management. First, either the chain or your motel is being excessively cheap or the housekeeping staff doesn't know any better. Everyone knows that when the facial tissue color changes from white to brown, there are only a couple of tissues remaining - so, where's the spare box? Here's another one - upon arrival, there's a toilet paper roll on the dispenser and a spare on the shelf. When the spare is used, where's new spare when the room is serviced? Is this lack of spare replenishment due to ignorance, lack of concern, or - dare I say it? - training? (BTW, I managed to find a housekeeper and get my own spares.) Secondly, on our last day of stay (a Saturday), the beds looked as though a 12-year-old had made them up - sloppy. Not only were the brown upper covers not refolded and put back on the bed - they were left in a tangled heap on the floor. What happened - did a personal cell phone call interrupt finishing the room preparation? Not a great last impression, guys, unless you would like being compared to an over-priced Super 8.

Non-business travelers, here a tip for your stay:

Don't wait until the last 45 minutes of morning buffet availability - it seems everyone delays until the last minute. Since the buffet closes at either 9:30 or 10 AM, you'll always be faced with a line, a shortage of tables, and staff scrambling to keep up with demand.

Final thoughts:

This was our second stay at this Drury in 2012 and it didn't compare to the first as far as housekeeping was concerned. MANAGERS :Holiday weekend or not, there's no excuse for sloppy housekeeping.

Would we stay again? Well, maybe not, even though the location is convenient for travel to our extended family's location. I would be tempted to take a shot at the local Hilton Hampton Inn or Garden Inn for comparison (even if not as conveniently located) - one of those is our usual choice when traveling. Or even a Holiday Inn Express - from our recent experiences, that chain seems to be making a real effort to "move up the food chain". And these competitors are price- and amenity-competitive.

Room Tip: Although pricier, the suites are a good choice unless you'll be spending all your time elsewhere...

And I can assure you that your comments and suggestions will be shared with management as well to help improve our product and services.

Also, thank you for your patience with our efforts to keep up during the end of breakfast. We have discussed with the team members involved how important every detail can be.

Let us again how sorry we are that we did not give you the excellent service that you and all of our guests deserve. I hope you will give us another chance and visit us again. We are confident that our staff will show you why we are ranked number 1 in Overland Park.

Our bus was running late, our guide called and they agreed to keep the evening buffet (included) open for us. The staff was so friendly & didn't seem to mind that we were delaying them.
The buffet is "snacks" and there are also alcoholic drinks until 7:00. It varies each night but we had salad, baked potatoes, chicken nuggets, mac & cheese, hot dogs and chips. I thought it was a great supper!
In the morning, the friendly staff greeted us for the delicious breakfast buffet.
Our room was very nice. We will definitely return!

Stayed three nights in early November 2013. The King suite was very accommodating. As with any Drury, you get lots of extras: wifi, refrigerator, microwave - and with the suite a separate bedroom and tv. The room was very clean. Maid service each day was prompt and efficient. The only drawback was the hordes of girls soccer teams staying at the place overrunning every public facet of the place: elevators, pool, hot tub, kickback room, breakfast, parking lot, etc. I know Drury cannot completely control this issue, but travelers should be aware nonetheless. Any time a throng of middle school age girls descend on a place, there will be ramifications. Overall though, another fine Drury stay.

Room Tip: Upper floor, away from expressway.
