“Horrible! Exploitation of poor, miserable animals. Do NOT take your kids!”

We saw the signs on I-70 to go to Prairie Dog Town. My 9-year-old son wanted to go, but we didn't have time on the way to Colorado... but I promised him we would stop on the way back. What a mistake. The old guy at the desk made it seem like something we would enjoy, then we walked out back. The conditions for these animals were sickening. Then we saw the 6-legged and 5-legged steers. They're pitiful steers with birth defects... non-functional legs that grow out of their backs. My 12-year-old daughter was literally in tears because of the conditions. There is nothing that is a "hoot" or "awesome" about this place. It's very sad.

“Totally worth the stop!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2010

We recently stopped here on a cross country road trip with our 8 and 10 year old boys. We proably spent an hour. It was a great place to see a lot of animals and stretch your legs. The 40+ rattlesnakes were great entertainment as were the tons of prairie dogs. (We don't get the latter in California.) And where else can you see a five and six legged cow? The owner is a crack up. Stories galore. If you go, you should check out his gift shop. Ask about the rattlesnake eggs...

“Better than expected!”

I read the negative reviews after visiting in early June, 2010, and am glad to say that PDT is now Very Good, in my opinion. I found that the animals all looked well cared for and well fed--in fact, we were disappointed that they didn't seem all that excited about eating the food from the little bag that we bought in the gift shop. Sure, the farm yard was getting hot as the sun rose higher in the sky, and it was starting to smell, but I guess that is how a Kansas farm is in the summer. The little prarie dogs popping out of the holes were amazing--lots of babies, so I guess they are happy. The boars and baby pigs seemed very happy in their mud, but I especially liked the coyotes, goats, albino peacock, miniature donkey, foxes, raccoons and bobcats. The gift shop is jam packed with unusual stuff for those with a sense of humor, the owner (Larry Farmer?) was fun to talk to, and the restroom was clean, cool and nicely decorated.

“Great attraction, and great people.”

I stopped at Prairie Dog Town not knowing what to expect based upon reading various online reviews. What I found was a unique attraction and animals that were well cared for. If you've never spent any time on a farm or around animals, then perhaps at first you might consider the conditions to be "cruel". However, it is obvious to anybody qualified to know the difference that these animals are well taken care of. The pigs, goats and buffaloes are very friendly...NOT a sign of distressed animals. If you don't care for the aroma in the air, then don't go...but don't complain about it. It is a farm, and farms do not always smell like roses. The gift shop is full of unique items, and the prairie dogs scurrying about are worth the price of admission alone. I talked for a long while with the owner, and she told me that she and her husband had been in business for 43 years. If these animals were as "neglected" and kept in "cruel" conditions as alleged in some of the reviews here, then these folks certainly would not have been in business for as long as they have. The animals get regular veterinary care, and it is obvious by having a conversation with the owners that they consider the animals to be an extension of their family.

If you really want to see some unique animals and enjoy interaction with those adorable little prairie dogs, I would highly recommend stopping by. Besides, there's nothing else around for dozens of miles, and it makes for a nice break in the monotony of driving through Kansas!

“Hometown Bliss”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2009

It's been a while since I have been there. We are making plans to go again. We will write another review after visiting to give our real opinion. We don't like prairie dogs. They hurt the farmland.

We know this because we are from Oakley.
Yea!!
