My husband and I both attended college in Hays and always heard Al's Chickenette ads on the radio but had never eaten there. So tonight when we pulled into south Hays with our family looking for something to eat, we decided to try it. Bad idea. The restaurant was nearly empty and we were seated right away. The waitress brought the kids coloring books and crayons, took our drink orders, and returned with our waters quickly. We ordered our meals (I looked forward to the "marinated" chicken) and out two salads came out pretty quick. The salad was nothing special, just shredded lettuce with one slice of tomato on top. That is where the quick stopped...we waited and waited and waited. One of my sons happened to say, "I'm starving!" while the waitress was refilling a water and she told him, "Hang on, it's coming." Well, it did come. About an hour after ordering! The kids' meals were a great value--large portions--and the kids like their cheeseburgers and drumsticks. Too bad they had to sit for an hour to get them. I had chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. The mashed potatoes came out of a box (my husband liked them, though) and the white gravy was bland. The fries were decent. The chicken was very crunchy but the coating was tasteless. The chicken tasted like it had been marinated in water--flavorless. My husband and I were both dumping salt on our food. We will not be going back. Ever.
