“Comfortable and Friendly”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2012

We stayed in the Golden Pillow Lodge for 5 days during a WaterAid Supporters Trip to Zambia. The lodge was great- I would recommend it to everyone- it was comfortable, safe with locks on all the doors and great variety of food. The staff were helpful, polite and friendly. The electricity cuts are so minor you will hardly notice them and every room has aircon. Every bed has a mossi net. It is not a luxury hotel but what comes with that is a chance to meet the locals as across the plot is a pub with bar and snooker table- great fun with the locals and some very funny games (are we playing Uk rules or Zambian rules?!) into the evening. If you do go, try the fish- it is great!

Ok, so the 7 rooms face onto Zambia's main arterial road, with its continuous rumble of giant lorries. And the town power supply is insufficient to run aircon for some of the day time. And there is no phone in the room, nor wi-fi (though internet access may be possible from a hotel computer in the lobby area).

But there is aircon in the afternoon and evening and by keeping the louvre windows shut, I preserved the night time cool throughout the morning in mid-September despite temperatures rising to 30C outside (aided by low humidity being at around 3,000 feet). NB: It may be worse in October/ November. The shower also worked well with a good range of temperatures from the mixer. All bathroom vents were netted, as was the window, and shampoo was provided along with soap. Staff were attentive and helpful. The breakfast (free with the room) was ok - I was quite satisfied with my instant coffee, cold orange squash, rice crispies (UHT milk unfortunately, but at least it was cold), buttered toast with marmalade, two fried eggs and rashers of bacon. Main meals are limited to what they have available, but there is always a choice of staple (shima, rice, chips) and two or three dishes such as beef stew, fried chicken, T-bone, etc: this also means the food doesn't take too long to arrive. Alternatively, there is a fast food shop catering to coach passengers on comfort breaks in the transit stop next door. The mattress was remarkably comfortable, with a spongy headboard, nice fat but soft pillows and a deliciously thick duvet (make that sweatily thick if the power goes off in the night!) Expecting poor town power, the hotel uses its back-up generator often (but not seamlessly), to run the power sockets as well as the lights. The room TV is large but stations are limited; news is only from CNN. In my room there was also a huge, comfy armchair to relax in and a desk to work at, as well as a fridge to cool my drinks. Despite the old-style door lock, there was a safety chain. And it proved convenient being located next to the long distance coach stop where tickets north and south could be bought and I waited comfortably in the lodge lobby for my coach to arrive, watching CNN. And the price was appropriate to what I got.
