“wonderful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 8, 2012

Went for a visit to Drake U for our daughter. Most of the "average-moderate" hotels were sold out, so we had to increase our budget to stay overnight. Had to be one of the nicer hotels we have ever been to. Great staff, wonderful roomy accomadations, fine location. Plenty of meal choices around the hotel. 15 minutes from Drake. If you are in to finer hotels, you won't find a better choice than this Sheraton property. Hotel breakfast buffet was wonderful.

This is our 4th hotel in 4 nights and the first time we have been charged for wifi. $9.95 plus tax seems like a money grabber to me. Even the rest areas in Iowa have free wifi. Apart from that hotel is very nice and staff friendly & helpful.

We have stayed in accessible rooms before and never had a problem, but the one in this Sheraton is not built correctly. The bathroom has not lip on the shower stall and all the water spills out into the floor. We are not handicap and it was a major inconvenience to us, but to someone who is disabled, this would cause a serious problem. We reported it to the management and they did not seem concerned. The hook holding the shower head was broken and we reported that. A person came to the room, but said it could not be repaired that night.

Room Tip: Do not stay in the handicap room.

This staff was great and everything was enjoyable. Disappointed there is not a hot tub/steam room. The worst thing that made me sick all weekend was the air freshner/cleaning products they use....the smell is strong like perfume and my allergy medication wasn't helping.

I know that the Sheraton is generally considered the lesser sibling of Westin and W, but it wasn't always like that. I've stayed at some pretty good Sheratons. This was not one of them.

I chose this hotel for my trip, because I'd read that it was recently renovated. To be fair, the updates that were made (business center, fresh paint, granite in the bathrooms, linens, artwork, flat-panel TVs) were done well, but the updates ended there, and it just wasn't enough.

The hotel still smelled old and musty. The carpets were stained in our room, but in the hall outside of our room, it was downright filthy. The bathroom was tiny, and the sink's drain was slow. The A/C was not functioning properly, so, even though we set the thermostat to 70, the air remained stale and was never cool enough to feel fresh.

The restaurant: Ashley was very pleasant when she served us breakfast the first morning, but on the second morning, the server and the lady at the desk both seemed to go out of their way to make my sister and me feel as though we were a bother. In fact, the lady at the desk was actually throwing dirtly looks our way. Fortunately, the all was not lost, because the gentleman who prepared my omelette and my sister's waffle was very cordial and prepared our dishes perfectly.

One other tip that this hotel and others doing "updates" need to learn - if you're going to use flourescent bulbs, you can't use bright white lamp shades. The result is very blue, cold lighting. That's why the hotels that do it right use cream or linen lamp shades or glazed golden glass fixtures.

I couldn't wait to check out of this hotel, and I will most certainly stay elsewhere when we return to the West Des Moines area.

This was my first experience staying at this particular hotel in West Des Moines and I do say that it was thoroughly enjoyable. I find the sound of the water fall in the lobby very relaxing. Iwould recommend this hotel and its location to those traveling to Iowa.

Room Tip: Clean and comfortable. Staff were helpful in suggesting local restaurants. Easy access to airport...

Loved our stay at the West Des Moines Sheraton. Just down the street from the Living History Farms, and the excellent restaurant, the Machine Shop. DELICIOUS. Huge portions. Great buffet. Oh Boy. Many shops, stores, and restaurants very nearby, too. Several within walking distance. The location was excellent- so easy to find off the Interstate. We loved everything- the fluffy beds with so many pillows and rich, white lines, huge modern bathroom, seating and desk space. Too bad Internet access cost about $9. Wish it were free.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem very nice. Maybe just ask. They seem nice to me.
