Description: Nestling in the picturesque North Downs its hard to believe that Maidstone is only a stones throw away from Thurnams Black Horse Inn. Looking from the outside like the most traditional pub in Britain white washed, tile hung, sash windowed, sign swinging in the breeze inside will come as no great shock. In winter youll find a roaring fire in the imposing brick fireplace, dried hops drape from the ceiling and antiquey dark wood is in abundance. In summer diners can head outside to a paradise of shadey pergolas, ponds and green lawn or eat in the conservatory. Homegrown produce is key in a sophisticated menu which combines traditionalism with contemporary dining with impressive results.

“Very very good”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 10, 2012

We stayed for three nights and ate every night. The service was prompt, attentive and very good. The food was first rate. Yes you pay for it but it is worth it. I can slightly empathise with the "over priced" tag when a dish e.g. a superb treacle tart was less than superb and only good on the second night because the portion was smaller and was not presented as well. The restaurant had to cope with a wedding but at over £6 for this pudding you expect the quality to be constant. This is only a minor gripe.

“Fantastic Fillet Steak”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2012 via mobile

I visited this pub with my wife on a Sunday evening as a "walk-in" and even though they were very busy they managed to find us a table. The food was great. We both had scallops to start which were delicious (and if I was being ultra critical would say they were a little cold) but the main course was stupendous. My wife had the best fillet steak I have ever tasted anywhere. It was cooked rare and was literally melt in the mouth. My main of potatoe, leek and onion pie was also very tasty and well cooked.

I had the cheese to finish and the portion size was enoormous though between us we managed to get through it.

All in all it was a fantastic meal in a lovely pub with good service.

“Well worth a visit or three... (If you can afford to)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 3, 2012

I love this pub especially the location, décor and atmosphere.

The beer is always great :-)

The food was good, however not a cheap night out and perhaps a little expensive…

It’s hard to find a good night out with good food so I will be prepared to spend the money again.
Me and the wife often feel like we are in hobbit land on a magical journey when we visit this pub because of the exciting and interesting feel of the place…

Well worth a visit – The belly pork duo was to die for… Half filet of pork and half belly, made me feel a little better for not scoffing a whole plate of belly pork…

Well done to the team at the black horse and thank you.

“great country pub and food - if you can find it”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2012

This is a first class country Inn and restaurant with good selection of beers, wines and even kent draught cider. We called in late Sunday afternoon but was still able to choose from the generous and varied lunchtime menu. The food was excellent and well presented. If you visit, don't miss the various boards with the days specials on display. There is ample seating within the Inn and also a conservatory at the rear, overlooking a pleasant garden with outdoor dining if preferred. All eating areas are non smoking including the outdoor dining area. Staff were friendly, helpful and efficient, and the cost of dining representing good value. The Inn has it own car parks and although we got parked easily, it is likely to get busy. I strongly suggest you do not use a sat-nav when visiting the Black Horse Inn as I have tried two different models and both direct to the Boxley end of the Pilgrims Way which is a good few miles in the wrong direction, so its best to follow the web site directions. So, if you can find this Inn, it's worth the effort.
