I have stayed here many times for business and it is an average property at best. Keep in mind that it is the niches property in the area and a lot of people like it.
The rooms are large and spacious, but are very dark with little lighting. Beds are comfortable and the rooms are always clean. There is a lot of counter space in the bathroom, however the tubs are small. The work desk / chair are terrible. The chair sits too low and is a regular chair, not an office type chair. If you spend, more than 10, minutes on your laptop your wrists will go numb because of the bad angle.
The food at the restaurant is usually decent, but not outstanding by any means. The higher end items are not worth the price. The service in the restaurant is hit or miss. This time it was very good. In general they are very proud of themselves and they don't deserve it. The view from the restaurant is beautiful.
I have never used the water park, but it seems small and with limited hours. I'm sure it would be fun for smaller kids though. There are several slides indoors and out.
Service is where this hotel really lacks. They need to send their people to Hilton or Disney school! Front desk staff are generally friendly, but slow and easily distracted. There is too much paperwork to check in and there is no quick checkout option. Good luck if you are in a hurry. If they get a phone call you are out of luck too. Housekeepers are oblivious to guests. They hog the one elevator with their carts and make no effort to allow guests to go first. There is no greeting when in the hall. I think they should have carts on each floor if they only have one elevator. I waited almost 10 minutes because they were loading and unloading carts on the other floors, then they made the guy waiting behind me wait again while they loaded yet another cart.
Outside the hotel along the lake is really beautiful with sculpted trees. An evening walk is a must.
All in all it is not a bad place for small town Iowa. Be prepared for slow, sometimes indifferent service and just have fun. For business travelrs its the only decent place in town, but that's part of the service problem. They know it and it shows.
