It's an OK hotel, but it has some odd quirks that travelers with families might not appreciate. The suites are overpriced.
Our family had never been to Okoboji or Arnolds Park before. So instead of renting a condo for a week like most families do in the Okoboji area, we wanted to dip our toe into the water and stay some nights in what seemed to be the nicest, or highest-rated, hotel in the area. We booked a suite that, with tax, was $240 a night during the week.
There were a number of quirks right off the bat.
Despite being a 2 story hotel, it has no elevator. If you book a suite, you're hauling all your stuff up and stairs because that's where the suites are located.
Some of the suites face the lobby and breakfast atrium area. They're not down a hallway. Sound easily bleeds into the suites.
They were playing "elevator music" at high volume in the lobby and pool area. It was older pop songs done in an instrumental, easy-listening arrangement. My kids could hear this in the front part of the suite and they had trouble getting to sleep the first night. The second night, I called the front desk and they lowered the volume. When we visited the pool area, the first night, the volume of the music was overpowering.
When we pulled out the sofa bed for the kids, it had been a long time since anybody had vacuumed underneath.
After sundown, lights were automatically activated on our private deck. There is no switch to turn this off. Lots of bugs swarmed the deck and made it impossible to hang out. I later put my hand over a sock and unscrewed the bulbs during our stay.
Despite being a smoke-free facility, the people next door to us decided to use their private deck as their own smoking lounge.
We expected the view to be that of a golf course. Instead, we saw a giant drab brown metal building.
There was a constant rushing sound from the vents off the bathroom while we were in bed.
The arrangement of the bathroom in our suite was odd. The toilet and shower were in a room in the middle of the suite, but there was no vent to turn on (even though we heard a rushing air sound while in bed). Most of the time, in hotels, bathrooms are located toward the front of rooms, so this was unusual. The sink was out in the open in the middle of the suite.
That's it for the quirks and oddities.
Otherwise, the facility was clean, the king-sized bed was very comfy, and the pillows were excellent. When we needed extra towels we got them at the front desk. The pool area was clean, lots of towels stocked. The spa and sauna worked. Staff were attentive.
Breakfast was good, although my kids found the egg product to be off-putting. They looked more like yellow pancakes. I guess they were that way for the biscuits. The make-your-own waffles were excellent.
This hotel is located about a mile and a half north of Arnolds Park on the main drag. It's got a McDonald's and Casey's General Store nearby.
I'd compare this hotel to a Drury Inn or maybe a really nice Super 8, but it has too many odd things to rate it as high as a Drury. It's really closer to a Super 8.
At $240 a night, including tax, our suite was way overpriced, especially for a non-weekend, non-holiday stay. I would expect to pay that in Chicago.
It just wasn't what we thought it would be at that price point. It's probably a really good facility for a single person or an older couple without children. If you're a golfer or just coming to the Okoboji area for a few nights to visit friends or family, it'll do.
Now that we're familiar with the Okoboji area and have learned about condo rentals in and around the lakes, we'll probably do something like that in the future if we decide to return.
Avoid suites that face the lobby. No elevator.
