As this is supposed to be a 5 star hotel we had booked a quiet junior suite and had high expectations. We arrived quite late at night and were tired. We were shown to a very small room with a mezzanine above with another double bed in it. This room overlooked the beach bar which was playing loud music. We went back and reception seemed amazed that we wanted what we had booked and paid for! Didn't they think we would notice? Or did they think after 40 years of marriage we shouldn't be sleeping together? Eventually after a long wait when we were given a glass of water (!) we were shown to a nice small suite with a lovely view. and a wonderful huge bed. Dining room being closed we were given a plate of food (!) Dubious looking meat, cold fried rice and plain shredded cabbage - yum. To be fair I said I was a vegetarian so they changed meat for vegetable pie. We didn't eat it.
In our opinion (having previously been to two five star hotels on Crete on an all inclusive basis) food was v. poor. No weevils like previous writer but plenty of hairs in the food! Overcooked and no fresh fruit apart from apples and oranges. I thought this was time of year but supermarket had loads of lovely fruit at reasonable prices. On the pudding course, as we found at previous hotel, Angel Delight is very big in Crete. We went on trip to Samaria Gorge so asked for packed lunch. Mine was two foil containers like Chinese take away ones. After walking over rough terrain for 3 hours carrying lunch in rucksack (and they were heavy) sat down to enjoy lunch. They knew I was veggie and I had asked for egg sandwich but on opening container found plain cold pasta and............cold plain boiled sprouts. And I had carried them for three hours before they went in the bin. Be aware this hotel operates a two tier all inclusive (or not all inclusive) system - black or gold wrist bands. We were not aware of this, so really it was just full board with a few cheap drinks thrown in. Alcohol was a big disappointment as I had been on the wagon month before as previously in Crete had really enjoyed the white wine. At least I didn't over-indulge. Please don't judge Cretan wine by what's on offer here.
Having just become grandparents we are not anti-kids and to be fair again most of the children were very well behaved but there is so many of them it is like being in a creche! Shouting over crying children doesn't make for romantic meals and there is only one dining room. We went into breakfast early and lunch and dinner late to avoid the worst. This hotel is geared to children and with only one swimming pool I leave you to imagine the rest. They say two but the other is only a small round paddling pool. A bit of solar heating in the pool would be useful.
If you have small children presumably you do not want to go out and about and have nightlife so this hotel is perfect for you. Around £50 for a taxi to get to and from Chania and to be honest I didn't think the taxi was going to make it back (and from the look on the driver's face, neither did he!) Well worth it though. Chania did not disappoint. There is a bus but at very inconvenient times and the punctuality is very Greek.
On the plus side, hotel is spotless, animation staff are v. nice and do their best but as an example we were told there would be darts next week but they didn't have a dartboard. 5 star and have to save up for a dart board?
Its worth walking round the bay as there is a nice sandy beach, pretty tavernas and shops with friendly staff. I enjoyed the time we spent away from the hotel. Btw Tripadvisor, what criteria do you use for the excellence awards? Was amazed to see this award in reception. In my opinion this is not a 5 star hotel in any way. We may go back to Chania but not this hotel.
