I've been going to Cuba for 35 years and while it is difficult to say I have a favourite, because each resort is unique in its own way, I believe that Costasur is close to the top, if not the first! The view, what with the mountains in the background, the natural ocean pool and, the bungalows, actually on the edge of the beach, is absolutely spectacular. What a glorious view to see first thing in the morning when the curtains are pulled back!
I really liked the location of the resort since it was close to Trinidad and walking distance (in runners!) to the seaside fishing village of Bocca. Having a bungalow was a must for me as I wanted to be able to walk only a few steps to the beach and plunge in the water after walking about 8 km to Bocca!
Aside from giving advice to book the bungalow, I would suggest you also bring bug spray and antihistamines since the sand fleas were having a hay day when I was there from December 14-21. I don't know if this is normal but I do recall that when I stayed at the Brisas in the same area about 6 years earlier, at around the same time frame, the sand fleas were a problem. I was armed so wasn't troubled too much by this but there were some people who were not happy about the sand fleas.
In terms of the bungalows, I decided to upgrade upon arrival after seeing that the bungalows were indeed on the edge of the beach. It only cost me 10 pesos a day (about $70) for the upgrade so was well worth the money especially since the bungalows have a little living room as well as the bedroom. I was in unit 6 and was very satisfied with its location. Frankly, I don't think I would take a chance on the upgrade when I go back just in case none are available...like they say "location, location, location!".
Regarding the food, it was well cooked albeit a little repetitive. I only ate at the buffet so I can't comment on the restaurant....I tried the poolside, water view grill and although the location was great, as well as the view, but I went back to the buffet after a couple of times. I just found the food better at the buffet and didn't relish the flies at the grill, especially the one that ended up in my fries!
I think the real test of a resort, at least for me, is whether I would book again. I would definitely go back to the Club Amigo Costasur. I can't neglect saying, as well, that the staff were absolutely lovely and caring. You ask and they are very accommodating. For example, I found three good sized conch shells on the beach (lucked out) but the conchs were still in the shells so I took them to the "lifeguard" (gentleman with the red cross on his teeshirt) on the beach and after asking how to get the live critters out of them, he said to leave them with him for about an hour. I went back as asked and he had cleaned them out and shined them up!
There are a lot of "repeats" to this resort, as testified by a special board with pictures in the lobby, and I can see why. It's great value and had everything I wanted in a Cuban holiday; spectacular scenery, beachside accommodation, decent food, and lovely people, all at a very reasonable price. Go for it!
