“Stay at the Zuber in the Amana Colonies in Iowa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2007

The Zuber Homestead Hotel is in an old building which the owners restored lovingly. I am a little suspicious of hotels that call themselves historic or whatever, often codewords for cheesy rooms in an old structure, cramped space, and so on...which I suspect has given the Marriots and Holiday Inn Expresses aand their cousins a real boost over the years. But at the Zuber, NONE of that applies. This IS a comfy hotel. We stayed in a suite, which was a really large room with two queen beds, very very comfortable beds, nice sheets and covers. The owners spent a good deal on fixtures and niceties. I cannot speak for other rooms but we looked in on a few of the other suites and they were equally large and nicely done. The cost? I think it rang in at 100 even with tax Express or driving along up to Cedar Rapids for alternatives in the hotel chain market. Checking in, the owner's wife apologized for being there (uh, why? never clear, really, but happy all the same), but her husband was out deer hunting (hey, it's Iowa...). Her daughter, a slip of a girl of 11, had bagged a many point buck last year with her rifle. Hmmm. Indeed, one room is the deer room or something, and has many trophies on the wall. Did not see that one, but it woulda been suite... We ate dinner at the Ronnenberg in a nearby Amana town (Upper Amana? Unter Amana?). The deer hunters were at the bar, in full orange or camouflage regalia (so, do deer see color and if not, then why not all orange, or if they do, was the orange guy skunked?), having a good time. Food was fine, nothing really to write home about but good and hearty fare, fast no nonesense service you bet. Very nice people make all the difference and in the Midwest, this goes without saying. My sister from LA constantly remarks on this (as did I years ago when I was beached here not far away). Bottom line: Stay at the Zuber for a very comfortable sleep, nice rooms, excellent folk and a good breakfast included in the deal. Then, go out and see what the Amana colonies were all about (basically, a communistic religious society, fascinating part of our national life).
