We found a coupon in Nebraska and called two and a half hours away and the manager said he would hold a room for us. The people were friendly, we had a nice king size bed, they accepted dogs for a price, had a nice pool and whirlpool, and had a decent breakfast. Our room had a smell like someone may have smoked in there even though it was supposed to be a smoke free room. But all in all it was a good place for the money.

This is the second nastiest motel we have stayed at (unfortunately both in Iowa). The amazing motel next door was full so we opted to stay at the Days Inn. (Same price as next door) Big mistake. The lobby stunk so horribly of cigarettes we both gagged. The hallways and rooms were worse. Just another ignorant motel thinking you can just change the sign on the door to change it from smoking to non without replacing carpet, drapes, matress and all bedding and painting the walls. There were dead beedles in the hallway going out the door and for the three days we stayed, they stayed also even though the maids came through. We had a live beetle in our bathroom. The beds were comfortable, but our clothes stunk so bad from just being laid on the bed that we caused problems at the hospice we were visiting and an overpowering stench in the car. The desk staff in the evening were clueless, chomping on gum and not friendly at all. The lady at the desk in the daytime was completely professional and welcoming. The breakfast bar was very good; however, there was a huge splotch of gravy on the wall behind the biscuits and gravy that was there for the whole three days. I would drive 60 miles in order not to stay here again.

Room Tip: Walk through the motel before deciding to stay to check out your smoke tollerance and check nearby m...

I wasn't feeling well during a cross-country trip, so we stopped here on short notice to rest for the day. Our room faced an open field, which was nice. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were clean. The children enjoyed the indoor swimming pool and later exploring the downtown area and University's campus.

My biggest problem with this property is that it is not 100% non-smoking and there does not seem to be much differentiation between non-smoking areas and smoking areas. That means that when you enter the south side entrance the entrance smells of smoke. As you walk down the hallway towards your room you can smell smoke everywhere. One time I stayed the room itself appeared smoke-free and the stay was relatively pleasant. But the last time my non-smoking room was on a floor that smelled of smoke and the room itself reeked of smoke. Apparently the staff still wanted to rent it out as non-smoking so they bombed it with air freshener, but that just meant you had smoke with an overlay odor of air freshener. I won't be returning.

Booked a room through Travelocity (mistake #1) for this Days Inn (mistake #2). A family emergency came up and I needed to cancel the reservation a week in advance. Spoke with Travelocity who said the hotel had a no-refund policy on this reservation but would contact the owner/manager to see if they would okay the refund given the circumstances. Manager said NO, corporate policy is to not issue a refund (lie #1), spoke with corporate who said it was up to individual hotel policy. When I spoke with the the Grinnell hotel it was said that only Travelocity could issue the refund (lie #2). Bottom line, never book through Travelocity/Days Inns and don't trust a word the management of this particular establishment tells you!
