We reserved rooms on both sides of RAGBRAI, figuring that it would be just the perfect place to start and end our trip across Iowa. After an 18+ hour drive into town, we were shocked to see a simple piece of paper on the door stating "Closed Until Further Notice". No phone call, no email, no warning that they were out of business. Upon inquiring at the diner down the street, it seems they they went into foreclosure in the 3rd week of July and simply turned off the lights and locked the doors. While we were fortunate to find another room that was sort of in the area (it was another hour drive!), we were very disappointed in not having been notified. The crazy thing we have learned in the meantime is that while the phone number has been disconnected, you can still book a room on their website!

This was my second stay here while on a railfanning vacation. For this it is ideally suited with trains regularly passing within a few yards. It has pleasant rooms and an excellent breakfast served with “proper” plates and silver ware, a change from chain motels. But it seems to have gone downhill since my previous visit. The owner/manager who previously had provided such a warm welcome seemed to be away and I had to wait ages on arrival to find someone to let me into my room. The adjoining restaurant was shut and Fort Madison, which is generally looking rather run down as a town, does not seem well endowed with eating places. The room also did not have a coffee maker or fridge.

We reserved a block of rooms for August and just received emails saying our reservation has been cancelled and don't bother calling because no one is there to answer your calls. Since then I have tried to call, the phone is still connected but no answer and I keep receiving modification/cancellation emails from them. Do NOT give them your business, even if they are there.

This is called a B & B but is more like a hotel. The furniture is all Victorian era dated and very attractive. The room I had was large and extremely comfortable. Get a room overlooking the old fort and the river. Approx 100 trains go by a day, but that did not worry me at all. The owner is also very polite and pleasant. The breakfast room is also very quaint with a buffet continental and table service hot food.

The Kingsley Inn is a combination of the very best in hotels and B&B's. Located near the banks of the Mississippi we had a very large room overlooking the river. All the rooms are beautifully decorated in Victorian style and very ample, with good bathroom facilities. The Breakfast Room is also beautifully decorated and we were served an unusual and delicious (complimentary) breakfast: French toast with a raspberry sauce, prepared by a special baker-cook. The manager is warmly friendly and the location is in the town center with ample free parking. The room price was reasonable. Yes, there were frequent freight trains rumbling by across the road and train horns sounding (but I woke only once all night). Now I know why Warren Buffett bought the Burlington Northern. He must have stayed at the Kingsley and noticed the rail traffic. (Just kidding).

Room Tip: If you're sensitive to the train noise, request a rearside room (but you won't be able to se...

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

Our most recent visit was in September 2012. We have stayed at the Kingsley Inn several times over the years and it continues to be a wonderful spot in a pretty location. It looks out on the Mississippi River, with the old Fort almost right in front. There is a nice park along the river which is great for walking and just watching the river (and the barges) roll by. Fort Madison doesn't have that much to see, but if you want to just relax and watch the world go by, it's perfect.
The rooms are really nicely decorated. Every time we have stayed there the rooms were very clean and well maintained. The hotel is right next to a very busy railway line, but the rooms are extremely well soundproofed. My wife, who is a light sleeper and a bit picky about noise, slept right through with no complaint. I wish I could say the same about the air conditioner, which worked well but was a bit noisy, turning on and off all night. We eventually ran it til the room was really cool, and then just switched it off.
They serve a nice breakfast - different every morning - and there is Alpha's, a restaurant, right next door for lunch or dinner. There is also a decent family restaurant with a decent salad bar just around the corner.
Fort Madison isn't the world's most exciting tourist destination, but if you are looking for a place to stop on a crosscountry drive, or if you want a peaceful getaway, it's perfect.

The room we rented at the inn was spacious and comfortable. For an old inn, the refurb was top notch. We could not have asked for more when it came to comfort and space. One issue to consider when staying at this location is the noise from the trains constantly going by. We wanted to stay in this place because of the view of the Mississippi River and we were not disappointed. There is also a restaurant that is adjoining the inn called Alpha's, owned by the same people, that had good food and spirits available. I would definitely recommend this as a good stay in Ft. Madison. I met the owners and they were helpful and friendly in every way.

Room Tip: Rooms in the back without a view are quieter since the trains go by directly in front of the inn. G...
