“New Shoots”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

New Shoots went out of business this year. It's a beautiful, ambient setting, a nice addition to this small town. There seemed to be lack of proper management. At the Sunday brunch, there were approximately 10 customers, 3 wait persons and a cook, and the service was exasperating. I wish it had succeeded.

“Hidden Treasure in Small-town Iowa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 25, 2013 via mobile

First class meal! Pork chop stuffed with apples, cranberries, carmelized red onions and topped with a maple syrup drizzle and Maytag blue cheese. Wow! Couldn't resist desserts of Creme broule and lemon mousse with blueberries. Great service, too. We're traveling around the area for a couple of days and will try to get back for another meal.

“WAY too pricey”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 13, 2013

We got some of their baked goods - they were good but nothing to brag about.. and FAR overpriced for the area. The staff seemed busy and not very friendly

“New food, from an old name in the community”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

This restaurant and bakery rests on his history, as the Soper family was one of the most influential in the community through the turn of the century. The last one, that is. The latest generation apparently has a social conscience and a desire to make interesting, well-made cuisine.

Every time I've stopped here -- lunch, or for a bakery treat -- the food has been first rate, the service deferential. Think of local, organic foods, prepared and served by the staff of Four Seasons. For a small-town restaurant, the effect is artsy, classy . . . and delicious.

If you are ever in this part of the state, this small, tastefully decorated restaurant is worth a visit. Save room for hand-made breads, cookies and pastries.

“New Shoots really nailed it this time!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 30, 2012 via mobile

I have been to New Shoots several times since they opened last March and while our service has always been excellent, the food has been hit or miss. Last Friday, my husband and I went for supper and it was fantastic! The prime rib was so tender it could be cut with a fork and served with a PILE of garlic mashed potatoes (although we were both jealous of the table next to us who ordered the macaroni au gratin side). Flavorful soup, fresh bread and perfectly seasoned and sauteed veggies rounded out the meal- all at a great price. Looking forward to our next visit!
