“Outstanding property with historic charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 15, 2010

If you are traveling to or even driving through Dubuque, stay here! I love hotels that have character, are clean & staffed with people who care about people. This hotel exceeded my expectations in all of those respects.

The building itself has modern amenities while losing nothing of it's original grandeur. The lobby features rich, dark woodwork, lovely furnishings & large windows looking out onto Main St. A balcony surrounds the lobby on 4 sides. Both levels provide plenty of seating areas. The pool, hot tub & fitness center were very clean.

I had a hot stone massage at the spa. The massage therapist was friendly & responsive to my needs. The spa itself was immaculate & tranquil. Soothing music in the waiting area. Locker room was well stocked with Aveda spa products.

My room was very comfortable & well decorated. I had a deluxe room, which featured a sitting area separate from the sleeping space. It was one big room with 3 huge windows. The sitting area had a pull-out sofa, chair & two tables. The pull out sofa was very nice to sit on & was unlike the run of the mill pull out sofas that most hotels have. The mattress was perfect for me- medium firmness with a plush top. The sheets were great- clean & soft. My room was handicapped accessible & therefore had a walk in shower. It was clean & had a hand held shower sprayer, which is always handy.

All of the staff I encountered had smiles on their faces & seemed genuinely concerned with the satisfaction of the guest. If the hotel continues to keep up their high standards, I am sure it'll become a destination in itself in Dubuque.

I had heard through a business collegue that this hotel had gone through some rennovations. I've only stayed at one other hotel in Dubuque that I was less than impressed with so I wanted to try somewhere different.

The pictures shown on the hotel's website are actually reflective of what you get when you check in. The place is beautiful from the moment you walk in the lobby. The room was very romantic stocked with snacks and beverages. We had went for a night of gambling and a mini getaway from the kids. I did not want to leave the hotel room it was so beautiful. For the luxurious feel of the rooms, the price was right! I can't wait to stay at this hotel again and have recommended this hotel to many of my friends and co-workers.

This is an old hotel that has been completely remodeled and re-opened about a year ago. The lobby has been wonderfully restored and is quite impressive. As with most old hotels, the rooms are on the small side, but they more than make up that with ambiance. The experience is a little like stepping back in time, with added touches of modernity. It's elegant and quiet, and a real relief from the cookie cutter chains of motels out there. And, it was less expensive than most of those impersonal chains. Caroline's, the restaurant in the hotel, is a little pricey, but very good. If you have to spend a night in Dubuque, this is certainly the place to stay.

We were impressed from the moment we walked in the door. This place is historical AND beautiful. This must the best hotel in the area. You won't regret staying here! They are the same price as the Holiday Inn, but far better. Not even on the same level.

I loved my staty at Hotel Julien. The hotel is beautifully refurbished nice amenities as well as a great staff. The restaurant is a great place to have breakfast. I have stayed here on three occasions while visiting Galena. This is a must stay whenever near or close to Dubuque.

Love it!

I took a trip to have a couple of days away on my own. Originally I had planned to stay in a bed and breakfast but decided to investigate a hotel just for convenience sake. I realized I didn't want a great deal of interaction for this visit and it seemed right. Location, ambience, etc. and great reviews led to this booking. I booked through Hotels.com for the first time. Upon easy arrival, due to excellent directions from hotel website, I was checked in by a very friendly and welcoming member of staff. My room was lovely, overlooking the riverwalk, but also right at rooftop/air conditioning level. It was to be home for two evenings, so I went to the desk and asked, very politely of course, if by booking through a discount hotel site, the less desirable rooms are assigned. Perhaps with others, but not Hotel Julien. I was promptly switched to another room, this one on the top floor overlooking the river at no additional charge. It was perfect. I settled in straightaway and happily went out to walk Dubuque. It was suggested by hotel desk staff that I venture to the Welcome Center for ideas specific to my taste. What a fantastic way to begin an adventure! I'd visit Dubuque again, stay again at Hotel Julien and certainly recommend it to anyone looking for a lovely, friendly, perfectly situated short term home away from home.

I met my cousins, with kids, from all over the country here for a long weekend. I grew up in Dubuque and stayed at the Julien several years ago for a class reunion and it was a dump then. That has changed in the biggest way possible!! From the lobby (made me feel like it was the 1920s with the Billie Holiday playing and ornate decorations) to the well appointed, large rooms, this hotel ranks with any I have stayed in. Even the pool area is classy. Easy to get to casino and riverfront area on foot, many places to eat and drink around the historic area. Hard to believe there is a hotel like this in Dubuque.
