“Wonderful Stay at this newely rennovated Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 24, 2013

I purchased a "Suite Deal" at this hotel in downtown Dubuque through TravelZoo. The $99.00 special included a king or two Queen size two room suite and also a $20.00 food voucher at Carolines Restaurant in the hotel. The room was beautifully appointed, the bathroom was huge and obviously very newly remodeled. We had a corner suite, so noise was not a problem as we were really tucked away in our corner of the Hotel. The service staff was knowledgeable and extremely helpful with dinner suggestions. I feel that I received a very good value for my money and would love to come back here again (when the weather is a tad warmer!!!).

Deardasco474,

Thank you for sharing your experience at Hotel Julien Dubuque.

Glad you enjoyed the larger guestroom and bath space; the premier king rooms are reserved almost constantly for the guests' enjoyment.

Many Travelzoo subscribers love the deals that are offered. Watch for one coming soon.

We look forward to your next stay.

Sincerely,

Team Hotel Julien Dubuque

Booked on Travelocity and got a King Suite. Breakfast at Caroline's was excellent. Room was lovely. My only complaint was the wifi was incredibly slow. I have stayed before and never had that problem. Bathroom was huge. Mine was a handicapped suite, so doors were very wide. Got a good night's sleep.

The television in my room had HD. You had to look at the guide and they were the higher digital numbers.

The bedroom in the suite did face the river/train tracks. I have train tracks at home, so I don't notice train noise. I am more likely to hear the street noise so I request a higher floor if possible and I have never been let down.

Being in a long distance relationship, my boyfriend and I chose our anniversary for the most recent of our international dates. I went to Iowa to visit him. He told me were going to Dubuque, when we got at the hotel I was very surprised and feeling loved! He chose such a nice place. We stayed in the Whirlpool suite, which is very nice and can be definitely be used as a romantic get away!
The minibar item prices aren't that pricey.
The reception attendants weren't that sympathetic, but weren't rude as well. Did they job.

I'd just love if they included the breakfast in their night fare! Our croissants were burned, but I didn't complaint because i didnt want to make my boyfriend sad.

Room Tip: On weekends, try choosing higher floors.

The hotel is lovely. The rooms beautiful and comfortable. The hotel is suited for party events, weddings, celebrations...not suited for rest and relaxation. As other posts have mentioned the night club music penetrates easily to the third floor (likely beyond). The rooms are in no way sound proof. People walking the halls talking at a normal sound level are easily heard. Party goers coming back to their room at night sound as though they are right next to your bed. Traffic is easily heard and the train whistles come in loud and clear starting at 5:30 am and continuing on until 1am. The fitness room was fine. One out of two treadmills was broken. (2 Elliptical / 1 seated bike).
By the way, we booked our room through Travelocity and because of that we were not allowed to make any special request for a room that might have been less noisy, however that may or may not be possible in this hotel on a weekend. Will not be back.

Dear Penny900,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your experience at Hotel Julien Dubuque. Our sincere apology for the noise that ocurred during your stay; there are some weekend nights that as the bars close and the patrons leave the establishments, there is a period of time that the street noise does increase.

Not knowing your room location within the hotel, there are some "Interior" style rooms that are only located on the 3rd floor of the hotel. If a reservation was for an "Interior" style room, the staff would not move your reservation to a different room type unless requested.

The "Interior" rooms provide an expanded living space and bedroom with a skylight. These rooms are often requested by guests that prefer a lower floor location, less lighting for better daytime rest as they work overnight, and the extra living space that comes with often a discounted rate.

We truly do value each and every guests' comments that stay at Hotel Julien.

We hope to see you again.

Thank you. Safe travels to you and yours.

Hotel facilities and remodel are amazing but the staff is a bit aloof (friendly but aloof). Staff seems young and new? TV channels available were not HD and there is no pay per view. Had to find a RedBox and use my laptop. In fact, when I called the front desk the young woman that answered had to ask someone else if they had pay per view? They also didn't have an HDMI cord that I could've borrowed to at least watch a movie on the flat screen. Wi-Fi was in and out and wasn't fast enough to stream movies on Netflix or Hulu. Walls are a bit thin so you can hear people talking and toilet lids slam. If your room faces the river prepare for the train all night (loud even on the 8th floor)! Pluses - Carolines restaurant was great, room was clean, and Dubuque is great!

Dear Dan Sayer76,

Thank you for the comments shared about your recent visit to Dubuque and Hotel Julien. Our apology for the challenges with the wi-fi service; rest assured this has been looked into to the point that we have a different arrangement with our provider scheduled for implementation in a few short weeks.

Glad that you enjoyed dining in Caroline's and the City of Dubuque.

Sincerely,

From the time I called to plan dinner meeting event until the actual event everything was great. They were very accomadating and professional. Great communication. We had our dinner and small meeting last night and it was wonderful. Buffet which I was allowed to choose from a variety of items to be served. All the guests said it was a gourmet buffet. The servers were most pleasant and efficient. It was so comfortable people did not want to leave.

job well done. Thank you!!

The remodeled room was terrific. Queen size bed was comfy. Room configuration with bathroom was quaint. Bathroom was very large and all newly remodeled. We did not eat in the dining room. The ambiance of the lobby was very lovely. Location was noisy. We heard the train through out the night, and some Semi-truck noise on the nearby roads. Check In parking was nonexistent at the lobby level, on the street side. Parking was a little difficult, since it's either across the street, or multi level in the back, both being completely outdoors, thankfully it wasn't snowing or raining and had to drag our luggage through it all. There is a covered drop off area near the restaurant, but there are no valets, or bellman, and the luggage carts are not on this level.
