“Decent hotel, very good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2013

I'll start off saying my wife loved the hotel. I had mixed thoughts because it seemed expensive for the accommodations we got. Although, we did stay over Labor Day weekend, which I'm sure is why the price was high, ~$200/nt.

We were in room #605 and overall it was small. Big bathroom, a mini-fridge (stocked) and a big desk in the room. There wasn't a dresser to unpack your clothes so we lived out of our bags for three days - I found this to be a disappointment given the price we were paying.

Generally speaking, the room was clean but there was a huge spider web in one of the windows and a large dead bug on the same window sill that was very dusty. I'd say the cleaning staff aren't tall enough to notice or take care of these things, but it was obvious to me when I opened the blinds to look out the window.

No issues with noisy neighbors, staff or elevators, etc. what so ever.

The pool and hot tub are nice. Hold your breath when walking to the pool because the hallway has a very strong chlorine smell. They need to find a way to vent that outside.

The location is the best aspect because you can easily walk to many restaurants, bars and the casino all within 5-10 minutes; even shorter if you drive.

The Holiday Inn is 2 blocks away. Consider staying there if they have a better rate. It's not worth paying a premium to stay at Hotel Julien because you don't really get anything extra for the money.

Dear localdougy,

Thank you for taking the time to comment on your recent stay at Hotel Julien Dubuque.

Our apology for the spider web that you discovered; spiders can work quite quickly, though the appearance of dust reflects our need to be more diligent in ensuring perfect room conditionns.

The neighborhood around the hotel is a very neat and enjoyable part of the older downtown portion of Dubuque. Glad to read of your your enjoyment in discovering some of the cool places, to shop, dine, or reffresh.

Thank you for staying with us! Hope to see you soon!

My husband and I drove up from Aurora Illinois on 8/30/13 for an overnight gaming trip to the nearby Diamond Jo Casino. Prior we made reservations for our room on line. We received a confirmation email from the hotel. After a dismal drive though several severe thunderstorm we arrived at the hotel shortly after 10pm. Since I had reviewed the hotel location and parking it was so easy to find. Just a right turn on Locust and another right on 2nd to the hotel. We parked in the lot in the back and went inside. There is an elevator just to the right that will take you to the first floor and the check in desk or you can walk the carpeted stairs. Caroline's restaurant is to the left. We went up the elevator and walked into the lobby area. Very pretty lobby. There were sitting areas and a staircase that went up to the second floor.

At the check in desk we were warmly greeted and the lady checked us in. We heard the bass and music coming from behind doors just to the left of the check in counter and she told us it was their bar/ club and the music plays till about 2am. She also gave us two little bags of popcorn from a local popcorn store. We then headed back to the car to go to the casino which is literally a few blocks over the bridge on 3rd street. We came back at 2am, this time with our luggage and went to our room on the 7th floor. It was a lovely room. It was your basic 2 queen. it faced west towards the street and the bluffs. Since there was yet another lightning store we enjoyed watching it from the window. The beds were oh so comfy with plenty of pillows and soft linen. Since I am a short woman my husband had a good laugh as I climbed into my tall bed!. They have ice machines on a few floors and do not have vending machines. There are cans of soda, water, beers and liquor in the refrigerator in the room and a basket of snacks with a price list for each item should you choose to enjoy one ( $2 and up). We did not as we went straight away to sleep. The bathroom had a walk in shower and was very roomy. There were also two robes in the closet but we did not use them. Check out is at 12 noon which rocks so we did not have to rush out in the am.

The price for the hotel on a Friday was reasonable ( $122 with tax) and comparable to the Holiday Inn and the Grand Harbor Hotel nearby. We liked this hotel better than them as we had stayed at them before but wanted to try something different and seeing how it was Labor Day weekend wanted to avoid the Kids/ families at the other hotels. The Julien is a bit pricey for a Saturday rate but they have weddings there and I assume they fill up quickly.

Since we had arrived so late we did not have the opportunity to check out the restaurant or the other facilities. Arriving back at the hotel at 2am we did notice a lot of young adults leaving the nearby clubs and drinking establishments. Nothing scary or weird , there must be some popular nightspots in this area.

We plan of returning for another visit in the near future and will positively stay at this hotel again. It gave us a wonderful warm and cozy felling in the décor and in the ambience of the room, something you don't get from other hotels.

Stayed at the property recently for work. Its great to see the history of the area and have a landmark restored so nicely.

Rooms were very well appointed and although a bit small, some of that is just due to the age of the building. Loved the shower and all the energy conserving items. Great to see balanceof new and old.

Service was very friendly and its right in town with being convenient to all the shops on Main St and near the museum and Diamond Jo Casino.

Overall,it was a pleasure.

We loved the hotel. The staff is great and the hotel is super clean! We really liked our room and the bedding was very comfortable. The robes the hotel provides are totally awesome too! I would recommend this hotel and we would stay again. My only complaint was the traffic surrounding the hotel. It was a little loud since its close to a busy route. Other than that it was superb!

Room Tip: higher rooms may be a little less noisy with traffic and ask the staff which rooms will be the most...

This hotel has been nicely restored. We had a suite with a kitchen with full-size fridge, stove, microwave, coffee maker, even a dish washer. We never used the kitchen except to make tea one morning but it looked to be nicely equipped with dishes, cutlery, some pots & pans. TV's in both seating area and bedroom. Nice bath with walk-in shower. Within walking distance to the Miss. River Museum/Aquarium and the casino. My only complaint would be the front desk staff could be a little more forthcoming. Not much of a welcome at check-in. We had to figure out for ourselves that the easiest way to get luggage up to the room from the parking lot was to take the back elevator from lower level to the first floor then across the lobby to the other elevator stack. Service in the hotel restaurant is also perfunctory. I would like to rate the Julien higher, but it's the grandeur of the 1900's combined with lackadaisical service.
