“Beautiful old house”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 29, 2014

If you enjoy old homes and their architecture, this is a play you have to visit. The old wooden staircases, moldings, doors, stained glass windows, wallpaper, and the smell that only comes from the old woodwork, makes this an architects dream. They are still in the process of renovating the house, and the outside of the house needs loving care, but it is still an experience to be treasured. The owners are friendly, and go out of their way to accommodate special dietary needs. The only downside is the television, while the TV is modern, the cable (not their fault) reception is poor...but that's not a reason not to stay, I don't think I had more than an hour or two to watch anyway. The location is fantastic, downtown area, walkable to area attractions.

Room Tip: Higher rooms are less expensive, front rooms give a nice view of the area.

Thank you for the kind words. On the cable reception: We have digital cable and have not had any problems. Some channels are analog, but most are digital. We have all new digital ready TV's also. It can be a problem for someone not familiar with a particular TV to get the right digital channel because they must put the - in while selecting the channel and it can be confusing on the remote how to do that. Also, I checked the remote and the batteries in the remote were getting weak, they worked OK for a few clicks, but after that had to rest before it worked. Anyway, in general (and that includes The Richards House) Bed and Breakfast Inns have been ahead of Hotels in the electronic revolution. They typically had Internet access in rooms before Hotels, and got WiFi for their guests before hotels also. If someone can't get their in-room electronics to work right, please let the Innkeeper know so they can get it straightened out while the guest is there.

The hosts are so helpful and friendly, that you almost feel you already know them. Our room was large and filled with priceless antiques, just as the rest of the house was. We even had a lovely fireplace to warm up by. The bathroom was in the midst of renovation, but certainly useable. Breakfast was fantastic, better than the best restaurant you could ever find. Situated in the center of town. Prices are extremely reasonable and they are pet friendly! If you hate antiques, do not go here. If you do, you will LOVE it!

Room Tip: Maybe not have a window facing Locust st. It can get kind of noisy

I was looking for a special and romantic place for me and my husband to stay for our 30th wedding anniversary this past week-end. The Richards House first appealed to me due to the room rates. Our stay was PERFECT! The breakfast meals were excellent. The hostess was delightful. We had a fire in the fireplace, wine to drink, soft drinks available, home baked chocolate chip cookies upon our arrival. I am sure we will stay there again and again, as we like to visit Galena on a regular basis. As the saying goes, don't judge a book by its cover. There is renovations going on since the house is 130 years old but we were not bothered at all by anything on the outside of the house. The fireplace, stained glass windows and hospitality were a wonderful experience. I highly recommend this B&B to anyone looking for a beautiful old home, wonderful food, and affordable prices. We were very, very happy with our stay!

Room Tip: Beautiful ammenities, good nights rest, great food!

My wife and I enjoyed our visit to the Richards House. We stayed in the Library Room and really enjoyed the two fireplaces and the ambiance of the room. The interior and exterior of the house needs some work (touchy faucets, light switches, hangers, etc.), but the Library Room setting is well worth any minor inconveniences. Wine, soda and bakery snacks always available to guests. Hostess is very pleasant. Definitely not a place for visitors allergic to cats.

Room Tip: Library Room all the way. Why wouldn't you pay the extra $10?

We recently stayed there for a weekend away. The interior of the house is incredible, though they are working on updating/repairing the exterior. The breakfasts were great with tons of food. We had fresh fruit, an egg dish, bacon, and a coffee cake type dish each day. They do have cats that roam the commons areas, so if you have issues with cats, this probably isn't the place for you. It is located within walking distance (in my opinion) of the downtown area, with many different restaurant choices.

SUCH A LOVELY HOME!! Built in 1883. My husband surprised me with this B&B when we came up to spend the weekend in Galena. The places there were booked - he found this B&B in Dubaque, IA. It was only a 20mn beautiful drive to and from. We had a lovely room full of old furniture and Antiques. Perfect for my husband and I. We are in our late 30's and have always loved this kind of stuff.
Ok - about this house. Kinda hard to find. The outside does not match the inside (at all). They are still working on the outside, so it looks really run down. The house is on 15th and Locust St - this is a ONE WAY going NW. On your R-side. There is a parking lot right across form them or you can park on the street.
Heavy sleepers welcome. If you are a light sleeper bring ear buds or ear plugs. You can hear the cars going by and people talking outside. This was a nagitive for me but the place its self out weight it and I did get some sleep. The other rooms my not be so bad. Ask for a room away from the street.
Breakfast was awesome, so much food - go to bed hungry...
There is a cat smell.
This is a place for couples not so much for kids. To many things they could brake. There are rooms with bathrooms in them and 2 w/o. Reasonable room prices.

Room Tip: If you are light sleeper get a room away from the main road.

We stayed here for for two nights at the end of July. The breakfasts each morning were very good-a really nice selection of casseroles, eggs, and fruit. Our biggest issue was the overpowering smell of cat urine in all the common areas. It made us want to stay in our room, which is disappointing in such a neat old building. We knew that this was a work in progress, but there are a lot of little changes that need finished which would greatly improve the overall appearance. We have stayed in many bed and breakfasts, and this is one that we will not be returning to.
