“We love this place”

We have had eaten at every Japanese Steakhouse we can find across the country. Our kids love it. The staff at Taiko is fantastic, friendly service and good food.

“Came back, not as good as before”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2012

So, we used to love this place when we lived in Dubuque.. then we moved to Chicago and have since tried more sushi places.
Taiko is a great option for Dubuque, nice place, great decor, etc..

However, the sushi was only so-so (main issue being the rice)
the service was lovely but sooooo slow and not timed right. Twice we went, twice we waited forever, twice they served on person and then the other 10 minutes later.

But really, my main disappointment was the quality of the meal. We did not have it at the chef table since we got sushi too. I got served all on one plate, swimming in terrible sauce (usually served on the side). It just was not done right.
Improvement are easy to make and would make a great deal of difference.
Though, being limited in options, it is still a nice place in Dubuque.

“Have had better”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 16, 2012

This place did not have any concept of timing for tables. We walked in and were told ten mintues. Twelve minutes later we were told ten more minutes they are paying. Ten minutes later we were told ten more mintues. After asking her if it would really be ten more minutes she comes back to say it could be more than 15 now. So after waiting over a half an hour we left the first night. We returned with a reservation the second night to be disappointed. The place did not have proper fan ventilation so my eyes burned from the smokiness and our coats two days later still smelled horribly. The chef did have pretty good knive and table skills. However, the food was probably the worst japanese food (of 7 different Tappen style restraunts we have visited) had. The fried rice was not substituted and was not cooked at the table. This was very bland and greasy. Our party ordered chicken, shrimp, fish, and scallops. They could all use some salt but the salt the chef used was not coming out of the shaker. I had to pay for sauce that was really too thick to use and the only thing on the chicken was a little honey which had we known we would have requested no honey. Noone thought the shrimp tasted like shrimp but otherwise the rest of the meat seemed fresh.

Nothing spectacular and at these prices, you need spectacular; not just ordinary food.
